Certified Surgical Technologist

The Surgical Technologist is a qualified scrub technologist who is directly responsible to the Director of Surgical Services, Clinical Supervisor, Charge RN or the Perioperative RN. They do a lot of ortho: trauma/ total joints and arthroscopy, general surgery: laparoscopic and open, gyn: laparoscopic and open, also we perform all of our own c-sections, endoscopy, limited ENT, cataracts, dental, limited urology
They do about 250 cases a month on average
- Must be comfortable with all age groups
- Equipment utilized in the unit/dept. (Is there computerized charting, medication systems, etc.)
- They have meditech for charting but a travel CST would not be doing any charting
- Required skills and minimum years of experience.
- Minimum 2 years, degree from an accredited school
- Specific licensures and certifications/registrations required. (ARRT, CRT, BLS, ACLS, etc)
- BLS (AHA) certification, CST
- Idaho will now only accept the following for Surg Techs:
Education:
- A Graduate of a CAAHEP-accredited school of Surgical Technologists (CST) or Nursing school (LPN)
Licenses/Certification: NBSTSA Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) or state of Idaho LPN license required
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Accepts direction in work environment under varied routine, critical, and/or emergency situations
- Responsible for clinical patient care given by self
- Responsible for staff development and teaching of scrub personnel
- Responsible for maintaining a sense of positive commitment and service in the workplace
- Performs pre-operative procedures such as selection and placement of surgical instruments, supplies and equipment.
- Participates in room set-up and cleaning
- Scrubs and assists surgical team in donning gowns and gloves
- Provides instruments, sutures and other sterile supplies during operative procedures
- Performs sponge, sharps and instrument counts appropriately
- Assists in decontamination and sterilization of equipment and instruments (Sterile Processing Unit/SPU)
- Demonstrates the ability to communicate and receive constructive feedback in a positive manner
- Responsible for establishing and maintaining healthy interpersonal relationships with all staff members
- Maintains strict confidentiality regarding knowledge of all patient information (HIPAA), staff and hospital confidential business
OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Successfully completes Operating Room (OR) orientation and checklists
- Attends a minimum of twelve (12) hours/year of continuing education including mandatory inservice
- Attends a minimum of 50% of staff meetings
- Participates in rotating OR Call
- Recognizes the important part this position plays in Performance Improvement of the on-going delivery of care.
- Abides by all Federal, State and Hospital laws, regulations and guidelines
- Graduate of an accredited school of Surgical Technologists
- Current BLS (AHA) certification
- Experience: Minimum of two (2) years’ experience as an operating room Surgical Tech preferred
- Licenses/Certification: Certified Surgical Technologist required
