Position:
The College of Fine Arts and Communication invites applications for a non-tenure-track, 9-month Visiting Assistant Professor (one year position) in Instrumental Music Education in the Department of Music beginning August 2024. Music Educators with a broad range of experience in the following areas are encouraged to apply: music education research and assessment methods, music in special education, brass techniques, foundations of music education, winds and percussion repertoire for music education, internship (student teacher) observation, related expertise in instrumental music education. Experience or demonstrated proficiency with diversity and equity in music education in urban, suburban, and rural communities. A clearly defined scholarship/creative activity agenda. Service to the department, college, university, and community based on candidate’s strengths.

Qualifications:
Earned doctorate in music education; ABD applicants considered. A minimum of two years of public/private school teaching experience is required. A strong and evidenced background in instrumental music education at the elementary and secondary levels. Background in research and assessment methods or music in special education. Experience teaching in some of the following areas: brass and/or woodwind methods, secondary and/or elementary instrumental methods, conducting, foundations of music education, and/or repertoire. Commitment to equity and diversity in all aspects of the position. Desire to work in team situations and proficient with the use of technology in face-to-face and/or online instruction.

Desired Qualifications:
College/University level teaching experience. Experience as an internship mentor teacher/supervisor (student teaching). Ability to teach in other areas of expertise. Curriculum design or redesign experience desired.
Responsibilities:
Teach and co-teach courses in the undergraduate and/or graduate music education degree programs which could include, but are not limited to, research and assessment methods, music in special education, instrumental methods/pedagogy (string, brass, woodwind, piano and/or guitar), instrumental conducting, foundation courses in music education, repertoire in winds/strings/percussion, student intern mentorship/supervision, and graduate courses in music education. Work collegially with faculty in the multi-faceted aspects of the music education program and curriculum. Engage in curriculum development. Recruit students and develop collaborative relationships with the local, regional, and national music education community through school visits, conference and in-service presentations, festival adjudication, and guest conducting engagements. Maintain a trajectory of scholarship/creative activity and service commensurate with a visiting assistant professor position. Engage actively in assigned service duties with the Department and community.

The Department of Music ( is committed to fostering a learning community that mirrors the face of the population surrounding the campus, regionally and Statewide. The Department enrolls a diverse student population of approximately 260 students served by 32 full-time and over 50 part-time faculty. This comprehensive music program offers a variety of concentrations in Bachelors and Masters degrees. Towson University and the Department of Music are accredited by NASM, MSDE, and CAEP.

Appointment:
Nine-month appointment. Compensated summer teaching possible. Starting date: August 2024.
