Job Description - Director,Educ&Nursing Informatics

The RN Nursing Informatics will serve as an applications analyst acting as the clinical liaison to nursing, medical staff, staff and other
patient/non-patient care areas to coordinate aspects of planning, designing, development, implementation, maintenance, and evaluation of clinical
information systems including the electronic medical record. Duties include analyzing complex clinical operations and structure processes to facilitate
decision making regarding clinical systems; utilizing the knowledge and skills of clinical practice to determine clinical functions that are suitable for
computer applications; and ensuring information systems are consistent with professional standards of practice. The RN Nursing Informatics will stay
abreast of information technology, provide opinions on emerging technologies, and aid in adopting technology and incorporating it into existing systems
and procedures. Leads or participates in projects involving technical components or technological risk. Directly reports to the CNO.


This position requires the full understanding and active participation in fulfilling the mission of Whittier Hospital Medical Center (“WHMC”). It is expected
that the employee demonstrate behavior consistent with the core values of WHMC. The employee shall support Whittier Hospital Medical Center’s
strategic plan and goals and direction of the performance improvement plan. The employee will also be expected to support all organizational

INFOMATIC

  • A. Attends department specific education/training, inservices, and staff meetings.
    B. Conducts department specific performance improvement
    projects as related to information management and nursing
    education.
    C. Acts as the liaison between clinical workflows and information
    technology in the implementation, optimization and ongoing
    support of clinical systems involved with systems/programs
    such as electronic medical records.
    D. Leads or participates in research and development programs
    or other projects related to the evaluation, selection,
    implementation and use of advanced information technology
    relating to the clinical environment.
    E. Provides technical advice with clinical consideration either
    independently or as part of a project team in relatively
    technical or complex areas, e.g., network design, network
    management, technology assessment, desktop services, data
    communications and messaging services, Internet and
    related technologies, etc., where such advice is essential to
    the ultimate success of a project or other initiative.
    F. Solves difficult technical problems with clinical consideration
    that are referred by others, independently or in concert with
    senior staff, vendors, or outside experts as may be required.
    G. Tracks problem resolution by external parties, ensures follow-
    up, and communicates status to all who may be interested.
    H. Maintains a high level of expertise and competence in current
    and emerging technologies and nursing advances that are
    pertinent to the business and/or which are assigned;
    maintains knowledge of all clinical applications that interface
    across the facility
    I. Tracks vendor developments to guide the organization’s
    migration to new releases of hardware and software within
    acceptable timeframe, budget and quality constraints.
    J. Educates and trains junior staff related to information
    technology and technology management through on-the-job
    instruction and formal training programs.
    K. Maintains current knowledge of legal, regulatory and practice
    standards as well as policies and procedures that are
    supported by clinical applications.
    L. Serves as a subject matter expert in applications supported.
  • M. Manage end-user education, issues and setup applications,
    including table profile changes and parameter changes.
    N. Direct re-engineering of clinical activities, as required, to
    improve the measured outcomes of patient care activities.
    O. Leads Joint Commission preparation activities and organizes
    all elements of the survey process including chapter

EDUCATION
Program
Development

  • A. Responsible for performing and documenting facility-wide
    needs assessments.
    B. Assists staff to identify learning needs and develops strategic
    plan to meet needs.
    C. Reviews data which may reveal learning needs.
    D. Meets with leadership to discuss & plan facility-wide
    educational department/hospital needs.

Planning

  • A. Develops annual education plan that reflects the strategic
  • plan of the facility.
    B. Designs educational programs which facilitate the
    attainment/maintenance of standards of care established
    within the organization.
    C. Plans educational activities that meet licensing board
    requirements, while adhering to regulatory standards.
    D. Develops effective written materials, i.e., outlines, lesson
    plans, handouts, evaluation tools/exams as needed.
    E. Applies concepts of learning to meet individual/group needs
    based on the age, culture, and educational level.
    F. Coordinates patient education by supporting staff with
    resources, educational materials and classes.

COMMUNITY
RELATIONS

  • Represents the facility by interfacing with various Community
    Corporate organizations.

  • A. Incorporates adult learning concepts in all aspects of
    educational programs.
    B. Adjusts curriculum and presentation to
    accommodate various age/developmental learning groups.
    C. Coordinates a system for age specific education from birth to
    end of life for all clinical staff.

A. Education: Bachelor Science in Nursing or Bachelors in Computer Science/Engineering or Informatics preferred.

B. Required Licensure: California Registered Nurse License and BLS certification required.
C. Minimum Experience: 3 years acute clinical nursing experience.
D. Leadership experience: 1 year supervisory experience required.
E. Knowledge: Understanding of key information technologies, network and system technology, expert in micorsoft applications,
project management, ability to multitask and complete complex projects across departmental lines.
