Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
The Education Abroad Advisor performs duties in two primary functional areas: 1) advising on high impact practice of study abroad and 2) educational outreach.
The advising component entails advising students on aligning educational opportunities abroad with their academic degree plans. Specifically, the position advises students on UNC Charlotte exchange programs and affiliate program providers opportunities. This includes study abroad opportunities that support academic progress and degree progression as well as providing guidance through all phases of the study abroad process including initial program selection, application, pre-departure and returned phases.
The second functional area is educational outreach to UNC Charlotte students in support of unit and University global strategic planning initiatives. The Advisor supports all Education Abroad outreach initiatives and includes responsibility for initiating promotional and recruitment programs and collaborating on supporting under-represented students. UNC Charlotte sends approximately 800 – 1,000 students abroad each year. ● Serve as the primary student advisor for study abroad opportunities available through the UNC Charlotte Education Abroad office
● Develop and maintain an in-depth knowledge of all Education Abroad programs and opportunities, focused primarily on exchange opportunities and serving as the student liaison for affiliate provider programs.
● Advise students on international opportunities abroad in areas of, academic, cultural, financial, and professional interests
● Assist students with all stages of the study abroad process including inquiry, application procedures, acceptance, pre-departure procedures, and re-entry
Minimum Experience / Education:
● Bachelor's Degree
● Ability to work well in groups, work independently and advise on confidential issues
● Ability to manage software systems to streamline processes and communications
● Must be detail oriented in working with databases, applications and advising students
● Must have excellent communication, organizational and customer service skills
● Strong presentation and public speaking skills
● Ability to be flexible with other duties and special projects as assigned
● Ability to communicate effectively with students, faculty, staff and administrators with patience and diplomacy within a teamwork environment
● Experience creating student centered communication plans
● Experience working, living, and/or studying abroad
● Administrative experience working in a collegiate setting
Preferred Education Skills and Experience:
● Master's Degree
● Minimum of one to three years of professional experience working in a study abroad office
● Experience working with student information systems such as TerraDotta or Banner
● Comfortable using the standard suite of office productivity software including MS Office, Google Suite, Banner, web design management systems and data management systems
● Experience working with and/or advising students
● Familiarity with working in a university environment, ability to work effectively with faculty and administrators as well as connection with students and parents
● Must be motivated, proactive, and independent in the completion of job duties
