Job Description - Educational Sign Language Interpreter

If this is you, we invite you to become a member of our CPS work family. Position Summary: Cincinnati Public Schools is seeking applicants for the position of Educational Sign Language Interpreter. All qualified applicants are encouraged to apply. QUALIFICATIONS Education: 2 year Interpreter Training Program or enrolled in an ITP program. Licensure: Must be a RID certified interpreter (holding NIC, NIC Advanced, NIC Master, CI and/or CT, IC and/or TC, CSC, & NAD III, IV, or V) or a BEI certified interpreter. Experience: Previous experience interpreting in an educational setting desired.Education: DUTIES Educational interpreters are specially trained individuals who facilitate communication between students who use sign language due to hearing loss and students/teachers who do not. The educational interpreter's duties are not only specific to the student assigned, but they also serve as a member of the educational team of that student. The duties of the educational interpreter are as follows:
  • Interpret oral communication into sign language and signed communication into spoken English.
  • Convey the content of the message clearly and accurately according to the receptive language level of the student.
  • Participate as a member of the IEP team.
  • Adhere to the rules of confidentiality required of all school personnel.
  • Report student related concerns to the appropriate educational personnel.
  • Work collaboratively with the student's educational team.
  • Prepare for interpreting assignments including the vocabulary and content knowledge of the subject matter.
  • Tutor students and make adaptations only under the supervision of licensed educators.
  • Assist in communication throughout the school day in a variety of settings (recess, lunch, peer interactions, emergency drills) as stated in the IEP.
  • Report to building principal.
  • Supervision will be in conjunction with the general education teacher(s) and the hearing specialist.
  • Performs other duties and responsiblites as assigned.
The interpreter has specialized skills and training in the area of sign language. The interpreter's role is not to perform duties as a licensed teacher or to replace a teacher. EMPLOYMENT PROVISIONS Salary: $30.21 per hr. - per AFSCME contract
