Position : Lead Teacher, Multilingual Learner Education
Multilingual Learner Education Department Overview of Cambridge Public Schools
The Cambridge Public Schools (CPS), in partnership with our families and community, provides all students with rigorous, joyful, and culturally responsive learning as well as the social, emotional, and academic supports each student needs to achieve their goals and post-secondary success as engaged community members. About 7,000 students choose CPS each year, and our diverse student enrollment continues to rise. Over 30% of CPS students speak a language other than English at home, and over 70 languages are spoken by our families. Among the most common are Spanish, Haitian Creole, Amharic, Arabic, Bengali, Chinese, and Portuguese. Our schools proudly embrace this diversity. The Role:
The Multilingual Learner Lead Teacher for Grades K-8 will work closely with the Director of the Multilingual Learner Education (MLE) and MLE educators to ensure English Learners receive high quality instruction. The ideal candidate will bring expertise in language acquisition theory, teaching diverse learners, culturally responsive instruction, and supporting sheltered instructional practices. In addition, you should be knowledgeable about the WIDA 2020 ELD Standards, as well as the Next Generation ESL curriculum resources. In addition, the candidate will:
  • Provide differentiated, on-going professional learning (coaching, co-planning lessons, demonstrating/modeling lessons, planning monthly PD, and observing staff and providing feedback) through individual and/or collaborative time.
  • Assist staff in acquiring new skills, knowledge and the transfer of skills through custom-designed training, feedback, and job- embedded staff development, primarily in the areas of sheltered instruction, co-teaching, best practice in language instruction, and implementing English Language Development standards.
  • Lead ESL and SEI curriculum development for Grades K-8
  • Utilize the Ellevation platform to complete tasks necessary to comply with state and federal guidelines such as monitoring Former English Learners (FEL) students and Preschool EL students; preparing Parent Notification letters; and leading Student Success Plan meetings
  • Prepare reports as requested
  • Assist in the planning, organization and evaluation of program effectiveness, including analyzing student data.
  • Assist with coordination of ACCESS for ELs state mandated testing
  • Provide assistance and guidance to principals throughout the district with SEI/ESL programs and EL compliance requirements
  • Evaluate educators in the Department of Multilingual Learner Education
  • Communicate regularly and appropriately with teachers, support staff, students and families as necessary using district approved methods of communication
  • Model effective strategies for continuous improvement
  • Maintain professionalism in all challenging and difficult situations.
  • Demonstrate high expectations for educators and students; be effective in providing instructional support and professional development to teachers; and contribute to an environment that fosters mutual respect and cultural sensitivity.
  • Perform any other related duties as assigned by the Director of Multilingual Learner Education
Your Skill Set:
As the incoming Lead Teacher, you will possess many, though perhaps not all, of the following characteristics and qualifications:
  • Bachelor or Masters degree from an accredited college or university required, English as a Second Language, Bilingual education and/or applied linguistics degree strongly preferred
  • Massachusetts teacher licensure in ESL PreK-6 and/or 5-12 and SEI Endorsement required
  • At least 4 years experience working in a linguistically diverse or urban setting
  • Demonstrate effective leadership and interpersonal skills
  • Proficiency in English and fluency in a language other than English (Spanish, Portuguese, Mandarin, Haitian Creole, Somali or Arabic, or other language) preferred
