OR Nurse Educator

The OR Nurse Educator is responsible for assessing, planning, coordinating and evaluating orientation, continuing education and in-service programs for staff which are competency based. Recommends improvements in the quality of nursing practice and standards. Serves as a resource to staff.

Key Areas of Responsibility:

The knowledge, skills and abilities as indicated below are normally acquired through successfully attaining a current license to practice as a Registered Nurse in Indiana. 8-10 years of previous nursing experience in Operating Room is required.

• Demonstrates comprehensive knowledge of current training and adult education philosophies, techniques, programs, tools and equipment.
• Demonstrates comprehensive knowledge of and competency in performing procedures, assessments, treatments and techniques.
• Demonstrates analytical skills necessary to conduct training needs analysis, design programs, etc.
• Demonstrates ability to teach staff with a variety of educational backgrounds.
• Demonstrates leadership skills necessary to coordinate activities and motivate all levels of staff.
• Demonstrates initiative and high interest in teaching others.
• Demonstrates well-developed interpersonal skills necessary to interface effectively with all levels of staff and customers and to conduct group and individual instruction.
• Demonstrates well-developed communication skills, both verbal and written, necessary to communicate in an articulate and effective manner in front of groups. Relates to and provides effective feedback to the learner in a manner that is patient, constructive and enhances self-esteem.
• Works in a patient care environment requiring frequent changes in job demands.
• Operates office equipment and other equipment used to meet patient care needs.

Physical Demands:

• Requires the physical ability and stamina (i.e., to walk/stand for prolonged periods of time, push carts/wheelchairs up to 50 pounds, to position/lift patients at a maximum of 35 pounds unassisted, over 35 pounds requires assistance, provide CPR, etc.) to perform the essential functions of the position.
• Experienced operating room RN.
• (4) 10-hour shifts

HIPAA Compliance:

• OR RN Educator will have access to all labs, all x-rays, pre-surgical worksheet, pre-surgical checklist, H & P and physician's orders contained in the patient's medical record. (Other parts of the medical record may be required from time to time to assist with quality improvement activities.)

Minimum Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

• Current Indiana RN license.
• Current CPR certification, or certification obtained by completion of orientation.
• Demonstrates interpersonal communication skills required to facilitate effective interaction with a variety of health care professionals.
• Demonstrates clerical skills, including keyboarding a minimum of 50 words/minute and familiarity with software programs such as Microsoft Office and the Center's IS System. Aptitude for learning new computer software.
• Familiarity with medical terminology required. Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations, including addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and percentages.
• Ability to concentrate in a busy environment, and to give attention to details.
• Ability to function productively under stressful, demanding conditions.

Working Conditions:

• Accountability to Clinical Director.
• Normal OR environment with occasional exposure to chemical odors, cleaning solvents and other hazardous materials.
• Occasional exposure to possible injury when working with electrical equipment which require care and following proper safety procedures.
