Position Description for

Parents as Teachers Parent Educator

Parents as Teachers is a voluntary home visiting program for infants, 0 – 3 years of age, and their families designed to improve infant developmental outcomes and family wellbeing. A parent educator implements the Parents as Teachers (PAT) model, emphasizing parent-child interaction, development-centered parenting and family well-being in their work with families. Utilizing the PAT Foundational Curriculum in culturally sensitive ways, the parent educator partners, facilitates and reflects with families. The parent educator is responsible for delivering all components of the PAT model using the PAT curriculum, implementing essential requirements and quality assurance guidelines with fidelity, and collecting all data required by the Maternal Infant Early Childhood Home Visitation (MIECHV) Initiative and Parents as Teachers.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

· Excellent knowledge of community resources

· Excellent interpersonal and communications skills (verbal and written)

· Knowledge of and experience with computer hardware/software including Microsoft Office software, Internet, and virtual platforms

· Ability to safely operate a motor vehicle

· Ability to establish rapport with high-need families and empower them by building on their strengths

· Ability to work evenings and weekends as needed

· Ability to work in an environment with frequent interruptions and a moderate noise level

· Ability to independently complete job duties within required time frames

· Knowledge of family and systems theory

· Knowledge of obstetrics, pediatric health, and health care systems preferred

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

· Perform case management services for 20-25 high-need families, with an infant birth to 3 years of age, receiving MIECHV PAT services with a minimum of bi-weekly visits for each enrolled family

· Provide parenting and child development education to families

· Assists clients in accessing community services and provide information and education to clients about smoking cessation, parenting and infant growth and development using the evidenced based Parents as Teachers curriculum

· Maintain/update client files and ensure MIECHV PAT databases are updated as required per policy

· Assess the educational, medical and social needs of MEICHV PAT clients who are at risk for poor development outcomes

· Complete all MIECHV PAT assessments and home visits as required per program guidelines

· Prepare and facilitate group connections as required. Encourage clients to attend

· Provide personal visits focused on parent-child interaction, development-centered parenting, and family well-being utilizing the Parents as Teachers curriculum, assessments, and services

· Participate in outreach activities to promote Healthy Start and MIECHV PAT Programs

· Implement MIECHV PAT Program with model fidelity and participate in continuous quality improvement

· Conduct client satisfaction surveys as related to the MIECHV PAT policies and procedures

· Assist with completion of reports as requested

· Provide information to others as part of a multidisciplinary team

· Actively participate in monthly reflective supervision to ensure fidelity to MIECHV PAT Program

· Complete all job duties and case management tasks within the required timeframes

· Participate in trainings, meetings, workshops, conferences, webinars, events, and conference calls as necessary

· Other duties as assigned

TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

Must have a minimum of a bachelor’s degree in public health, social work, health education, early childhood development or related social science field. Two years of experience is preferred. Experience conducting home visits with similar population preferred. Bilingual (Spanish) preferred. Strong communication and writing skills are required. Proficiency in computer applications is required.

Must have a valid driver’s license and reliable transportation. Must successfully pass a Level II Background Screen and be able to lift 10 – 15 pounds.
