Description:

The Department of Microbiology at the  University of Tennessee-Knoxville invites applications for a Lecturer and Lab Coordinator, beginning August 1, 2024. This is an exempt, non-tenure track, full-time, in-person, 12-month position that is renewable yearly, contingent upon evidence of excellence in teaching and performance of programmatic duties. Principal duties involve (i) teaching an introductory microbiology course and (ii) coordinating the administration of multiple microbiology lab courses (from introductory, non-majors to upper-level majors) each semester. Responsibilities include curricular development as well as mentoring and supervision of laboratory graduate student teaching assistants (GTAs). 

A priority for our program is exhibiting care and concern for student performance and a desire to constantly revise and improve course materials to enhance student learning and well-being. Instructors in Microbiology are expected to adopt evidence-based pedagogies, actively engage in our teaching community, and be willing to learn from and work with, others to deliver exceptional learning experiences. It is expected that the individual will contribute to the Microbiology academic mission by mentoring GTAs in science pedagogy, maintaining inventories of laboratory strains, chemicals, equipment, and disposable supplies, participating in yearly peer reviews of their own teaching and that of their peers, developing programs to foster GTA and undergraduate student success, assisting in the development of new courses as needed, participating in programmatic assessment activities, and other duties as needed.

Qualifications:

 

Minimum Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in Microbiology or a related field completed by start of appointment
  • Three years of modern microbiological laboratory experience
  • Understanding of, and commitment to, contemporary pedagogical and student success approaches
  •  Proven ability to develop and maintain strong professional relationships
  • Ability to work collaboratively and communicate effectively
  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to multitask efficiently
  • Experience with budgets and ordering and maintenance of consumables and equipment
  • Self-sufficiency and self-motivation

Preferred Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in Microbiology or related field
