A total of one (1), Advanced Practice Professionals (either NP or PA) will be hired to fill this job opening.

Summary

To join a growing, vibrant Inpatient Psychiatric Services in a leading Academic Medical Center, providing state-of-the-art, empirically grounded psychopharmacological and psychotherapeutic care in a regional center of excellence. The focus of this position is providing high-quality care directly to adult patients with psychiatric conditions in the inpatient setting. This APP will be a part of the adult psychiatric consultation liaison service (primary) with responsibilities when needed to cross-cover inpatient psychiatry units and partial hospital program.

Responsibilities*

Responsibilities on the Adult Psychiatry Consultation Liaison service (primary service), and cross-coverage on Inpatient Unit (9C), Partial Hospital Program (PHP).

Assessment

  • Perform comprehensive psychiatric evaluation and mental status examination on adult patients in the inpatient setting for whom psychiatry is consulted
  • Order and interpret appropriate diagnostic tests.
  • Diagnose appropriate syndromes based on DSM-IV, DSM-V, and ICD-10 criteria.
  • Plan treatment in collaboration with patients, families, and colleagues.
  • Document all relevant data according to clinical and regulatory standards.
  • Provide indicated treatments based on scientific principles, using, but not limited to, the following interventions:
    • Prescribing psychotropic medication therapy, titration, and monitoring pharmacologic agents.
    • Evidenced based psychotherapies (e.g. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Dialectical Behavior Therapy, Interpersonal Psychotherapy)
    • Patient education including facilitation of self-care.
    • Referral to other health professionals and resources

Diagnosis

  • Formulates appropriate psychiatric/medical differential diagnoses based on the history, physical examination, and clinical findings.
  • Identifies psychiatric and medical needs of the individual, and associated needs of the patient's family, as a result of the evaluation of the collected data
  • See follow-up patients and write continuing Consultation notes as appropriate.
  • Collaborate with the faculty and multidisciplinary team on the C/L service.
  • Contribute to the ongoing educational efforts of psychiatry to the adult inpatient services regarding common mental health issues

Development of a Treatment Plan

  • Establishes priorities and a mutually acceptable plan of care to maximize the health potential of the individual patient. This includes delegated medical functions as designated in clinical privileges.

Education and Professional Development

  • We strongly support ongoing education and skill development.
  • Participates in the education of health care professionals and students through mentoring, precepting, feedback in team and clinical care settings, providing in-services, seminars, and formal presentations.
  • Participates in own performance evaluation and establishment of plan for self-development and learning.

Professional Standards

  • Abides by the standards of care and standards of practice established by Michigan Medicine.
  • Practices within the regulations of the Michigan Mental Health and Public Health Codes
  • Incorporates guidelines and standards into practice as established by state and national regulatory bodies and professional organizations

Organizational Relationships and Practice Environment:

  • Advance Practice Professionals (APPs) will receive medical supervision from the Adult Psychiatry Hospital Services Director or designee.
  • Advance Practice Professionals (APPs) will receive administrative supervision from the APP Manager.

    Nurse Practitioners only:

    • Abides by standards of care and standards of practice established by the Department of Nursing, Michigan Medicine

    Physician Assistants only:

    • Accepts and abides by the Guidelines for Ethical Conduct for the Physician Assistant Profession as established by the American Academy of Physician Assistants.

      Nursing Specific Info

      Employment is contingent upon successful completion of the credentialing and privileging process.

      Required Qualifications*

      Required Qualifications (NP):

      • Current licensure to practice as a Registered Nurse and Nurse Practitioner specialty certification in the State of Michigan.
      • Graduate of an accredited Nurse Practitioner program
      • Certification as a Nurse Practitioner by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), or American Academy of Nurse Practitioners Certification Board (AANPCB) as a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner in Adult Psychiatric-Mental Health Nursing or Family Mental Health and Psychiatric Nursing
      • AHA BLS certification.
      • Current DEA registration required.
      • Minimum of one (1) year of experience as an NP in a psychiatric patient care setting.
      • Minimum of one (1) year of experience as a NP managing adult acute and/or chronic medical conditions often found in a family practice, medical/surgical, or emergency department/urgent care setting

        Required Qualifications (PA):

        • Current license to practice as a Physician Assistant in the State of Michigan
        • Graduate of a Physician Assistant program accredited by Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA) or one of its predecessor agencies, CAHEA or CAAHEP.
        • Certification by the National Commission on Certification for Physician Assistants (NCCPA)
        • State of Michigan Controlled Substance License
        • AHA BLS certification.
        • Current DEA registration required.
        • Minimum of one (1) year of experience as a PA in a psychiatric patient care setting.
        • Minimum of one (1) year of experience as a PA managing adult acute and/or chronic medical conditions often found in a family practice, medical/surgical, or emergency department/urgent care setting

          NOTE:

          * Employment is contingent upon successful completion of the credentialing and privileging process.

          * In order to be considered for this position the applicant must have met or will have met all the required qualifications prior to the start date of employment

          Desired Qualifications*

          • Minimum two years? clinical experience (at any level) in a psychiatric/mental health setting
          • Training in evidence-based psychotherapy (e.g. cognitive-behavioral therapy, interpersonal, psychotherapy, or dialectical behavioral therapy)
          • Experience with psychotropic medication therapy, titration and monitoring.
          • Experience with crisis de-escalation techniques in agitated patients evidenced by Wells or CPI Certification.
          • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills measured by references and interview.
          • Demonstrated success working within a multidisciplinary team model measured by references and interview.
          • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision measured by references and interviews.

            Work Schedule

            Hours: 40-hours per week; 10-hour shifts
            Primary Days: Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and Monday and possible coverage on other days.

            The schedule is subject to change based on the clinical and operational demands where the employee practices.

            This position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the U-M and the Michigan Nurses Association and the U-M Professional Nurse Council union, which contains and settles all matters with respect to wages, benefits, hours and other terms and conditions of employment.

            Background Screening
