Job Description - Healthcare Navigator


The USC Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of Southern California (USC Norris) was founded in 1971 and has been continuously funded as an NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center since 1973. USC Norris has a rich tradition of collaborative research and serves as a major regional and national resource for cancer research, prevention, treatment, and education.

The Ralph Lauren Center for Cancer Prevention at USC Norris will be dedicated to increasing access to high-quality cancer screening, prevention services, and timely cancer care in Los Angeles County through an evidence-based approach for patient activation, workforce development, and the coordination of cancer care services.  Through patient referrals with L.A. institutions serving high-need patients, the Ralph Lauren Center will bridge the space between primary care (education and screening) and specialty care (follow-up screening and cancer treatment) in the area’s diverse communities. In line with the USC Norris cancer center’s strategic priorities for cancer care and health equity, the Ralph Lauren Center will focus on addressing disparities in risk and outcomes for cancers of the cervix, breast, colon, and lung.

The Patient Navigator position will be a critical part of the Center’s mission and acts as a liaison between patients, care team, and community resources by facilitating outreach, clinical, and social services. The Patient Navigator position will:  provide support and guidance to new patients (e.g., communicating required information before first appointments); develop resources, activities, and events to improve the patient care experience; and assist with building rapport with physicians and referral clinicians.

  • Excellent time management skills.
  • Demonstrated interpersonal, negotiation and problem-solving skills.
  • Experience in customer service.
  • Practiced use of discretion and decision-making ability.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Proven ability to build and maintain deep and meaningful relationships with community members and outside agencies.

Preference will be given to candidates who:

  • Demonstrate experience in community healthcare
  • A current understanding and appreciation of the cultural vibrancy and historical significance of local communities in Los Angeles and Southern California.
  • Extensive knowledge and/or understanding of numerous cultural issues (e.g., immigration, socioeconomic, LGBTQIA+).
  • Fluent in one or more languages in addition to English (e.g., Spanish, Korean, American Sign Language).

Salary

The hourly rate range for this position is $35.77 - $44.78. When extending an offer of employment, the University of Southern California considers factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the candidate’s work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, federal, state, and local laws, contractual stipulations, grant funding, as well as external market and organizational consideration.

Minimum Education: Bachelor's degree Additional Education Requirements Combined experience/education as substitute for minimum education Minimum Experience: 2 years Minimum Skills: Experience providing medical/clinical guidance. Demonstrated interpersonal, negotiation and problem-solving skills. Experience in customer service. Practiced use of discretion and decision-making ability. Preferred Education: Related undergraduate study and Specialized/technical training Preferred Certifications: BLS/CPR Certifications in CPR, basic life support and/or mental health first aid. Preferred Experience: 2 years Preferred Skills: Demonstrated experience in community healthcare and/or street medicine. A current understanding and appreciation of the cultural vibrancy and historical significance of local communities in Los Angeles and Southern California. Extensive knowledge and/or understanding of numerous cultural issues (e.g., immigration, socioeconomic, LGBTQIA+). Fluent in one or more languages in addition to English (e.g., Spanish, Korean, American Sign Language).
