Responsible for processing medical Release of Information requests to patients and third party requesters, in a timely and efficient manner in accordance with HIPAA, federal, and state guidelines. Will use designated equipment and databases to enter, update and maintain all pertinent information relative to requests and disclosures. Assist in development and implementation of information management standards and systems to support the patient record. Responsible for supporting ROI workflows within the HIM ROI Division.

Process HIPAA compliant requests from patients and third party requesters within 10-14 days of receipt.
Ensures that valid authorization is obtained to support the release of information.
Ensures accuracy in processing the proper data to be released and assures that the minimum necessary is sent while releasing records from numerous sources, both electronic and legacy systems, to prevent breach of patient confidentiality.
Demonstrates thorough knowledge of record content for both inpatient and ambulatory settings.
Demonstrates professionalism and sound knowledge of HIPAA, federal and state regulations when assisting customers on the phone and within the department.
Investigates attorney requests for Risk Management review to provide advanced notice of possible litigation.
EDUCATION:
Required:
High School Diploma or equivalent
Preferred:
2 year associate degree from an accredited school in a healthcare related field.
EXPERIENCE:
Required:
Minimum 1-3 years in an acute hospital setting HIM department with experience using an EHR.
Preferred:
3-5 years in an acute care facility with exposure to an electronic health record, Corporate Compliance, Federal Regulations, Release of Information and Privacy Regulations.
