Job Description - Lab Aide Co-Op, GSL Campus

Under supervision as an entry-level lab aide, responsible for registration of laboratory orders, accessioning and transport of specimens, internal and external customer service, and accessioning equipment cleanliness. Requires independent judgment in the performance of the assigned duties.

JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Accessioning and transport of specimens to the appropriate testing area, performing campus or reference laboratory.
  • Operates a centrifuge according to procedure.
  • Labels blood and non-blood specimens with barcoded labels and aliquots specimen if necessary, according to policy.
  • Assists with requisition entry task when necessary; works with Lab staff to ensures registration completes the process.
  • Adds cytolyte to cytology specimens according to policy. Learns computer downtime procedures.
  • Prepares specimens for referral (interfaced and non-interfaced tests) to outside reference laboratories which include logging, packaging, and mailing of specimens.
  • Reviews outstanding list, excepted list, and/or add-on list to assure all specimens accessioned and transported to appropriate testing facility. Learns and assists lab staff with maintenance, quality assurance measures and monitoring equipment under supervision (centrifuges, label and paper printers, refrigerators, pneumatic tube, cryostat, AP equipment, clinical lab equipment as appropriate).
  • Communicates as necessary with other health care departments on hospital campuses or outpatient clinical providers in a professional and appropriate manner.
  • Assists staff participating in other related duties, including special assignments related to inspection and accreditation projects.

  • Complies with Network and departmental policies regarding attendance and dress code.
  • Demonstrates competency in the assessment, range of treatment, knowledge of growth and development and communication appropriate to the age of the patient treated.

OTHER FUNCTIONS:

Performs other related duties as assigned or requested.

PHYSICIAL AND SENSORY REQUIREMENTS:

Walking for up to six (6) hours in half-hour increments. Frequently uses fingers for typing data entry, and hands for processing specimens which includes twisting and turning specimen caps. Continuously uses upper extremities for transporting of specimens up to ten (10) pounds. Rarely lifts, pushes or pulls from 26 to 50 pounds. Rarely stoops, bends or reaches above shoulder level. Hearing as it relates to normal conversation. Seeing as it relates to general vision, near vision, peripheral vision and visual monotony.

POTENTIAL ON-THE-JOB RISKS:

Biological hazards from handling patient specimens and biohazardous waste, i.e., blood and body fluids with blood-borne pathogens. Cuts and punctures from handling needles, other sharps and broken glassware. Chemical hazards from handling of chemical preservatives.

SPECIFIC PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT AVAILABLE:

Gloves, protective face masks/shields and lab coats.

MOST COMPLEX DUTY:

Coordinating and performing detailed tasks simultaneously that each requires attentiveness in a busy environment with many distractions.

COMMUNICATIONS:

Communicates with all levels of hospital personnel, clients, management, physicians, and outside vendors and visitors. Speaks, reads, and writes English.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

Ability to work independently and highly recommended by school staff.

QUALIFICATIONS

(MINIMUM)

EDUCATION: Enrolled in a healthcare based vocational technical school, or similar program

WORK SCHEDULE: Monday through Friday, weekends and holidays as scheduled.
