The Immunology Center of Georgia (IMMCG) represents a new initiative by the Medical College of Georgia at Augusta University to leverage the ability of the immune system to combat disease. The IMMCG will accomplish this by assembling teams of biomedical researchers with strong records of scientific innovation and technological development. The IMMCG will be co-directed by world-class immunologists Drs. Catherine `Lynn' Hedrick and Klaus Ley, both of whom have made major discoveries linking immune cells to specific mechanisms of disease. The goal of the IMMCG is to produce novel and effective treatments for conditions that heavily impact the communities of Georgia and the United States. The new center is aggressively recruiting faculty and staff to lead projects focused on cardiovascular disease, obesity and metabolic disorders, autoimmune and infectious disease, neurodegenerative disease and cancer.

 

Job Summary

The primary responsibilities of this position include mouse colony management and care tasks such as weaning, breeding, clipping, PCR genotyping, and record keeping. The employee will also assist with administrative tasks such as ordering, invoice management, and maintaining stocks relevant to mice (for example, Western diet). After receiving training, the employee will work under minimal supervision on a day-to-day basis and will be capable of managing his or her own duties and research efforts effectively.

Responsibilities

The duties include, but are not limited to:

 

Animal Weening:Assist with animal colony through breeding and weaning; avoid overcrowded cage penalties.

 

Housing:Maintain cage cards, animal histories, and other records as required.

 

Collections:Collect tail clippings from mice and prepare for shipping twice a week.

 

Results:Enter and track genotyping results.

 

Ordering:Place mouse orders. Receive new mice into database. Assist with mouse colony management software.

 

Reports:Generate reports on specific mouse lines. Meet with supervisors to start new mouse lines (Genetics).

 

Observation:Observe animals on a daily basis to assess health, environmental conditions, and social environment.

 

Procedures:Perform pinning and surgeries as needed.

 

Diets:Administer special diets.

 

Other:Perform other related duties as assigned by P.I.

 

Required Qualifications

Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in chemistry, biology, biochemistry, cell biology or other natural, life, health care or materials science directly related to the research area to which the position is assigned and experience in a research, basic science or clinical setting particularly clinical trials research; OR Associate's degree from an accredited college or university in chemistry, biology, biochemistry, cell biology or other natural, life, health care or materials science directly related to the research area to which the position is assigned and a minimum of three years' experience in a research, basic science or clinical setting particularly clinical trials research.

 

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

 

Proficient in Microsoft Office and other computer software/databases.

 

SKILLS

 

Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills. Detail-oriented with strong organizational and critical thinking skills.

ABILITIES

 

Ability to maintain confidentiality. Ability to use sound judgement and work independently.

 

Shift/Salary/Benefits

Shift: Days; Monday - Friday (Work outside of normal business hours may be required).

 

Salary: $15.00-$17.42

 

Pay Grade: R9

 

Salary to be commensurate with qualifications of the selected candidate within the established range (generally minimum-midpoint) of the position.
