GENERAL DESCRIPTION: The Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) is seeking a full-time Highway Maintenance Specialist I to work for the Traffic/Signing program. This position is under limited supervision; and participates in the primary placement, installation, overlaying, maintenance, and repair of all sizes of highway signs to safely and efficiently regulate, warn, and inform the traveling public, according to the Wyoming Department of Transportation and MUTCD (Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices) regulations throughout District Three.

- Participates in work operations and makes sure completed work meets WYDOT specifications, including mounting height, lateral placement, road angle, wind load, and safety breakaway criteria.
- Assists with signing for emergency road damage operations.
- Review existing signs on the highway system and schedule damaged, faded, or improper installations for overlay or replacement.
- Orders replacement or new signs calculates post lengths, takes locations, and arranges for utility locates for new sign installations or signs that have been damaged by wind or vehicle crashes.
- Help notify maintenance crews of upcoming work and work that has been completed.
- Assists with the annual District sign maintenance program.
- Inspect all signs District-wide for vandalism, reflectivity, failure of materials, and overall general condition of the signs.
- Orders required sign overlays or replacement signs for both District and Maintenance crews.
- Delivers overlays and signs that have been constructed in the sign shop to the maintenance crews.
- Helps maintain a physical inventory of signing materials on hand and maintains a computerized inventory of all signs and sign appurtenances.
- Mentors other employees on safe work procedures, equipment operation, material management, inventory, and daily time and charge entries.
- Assumes supervisor role in the absence of the foreman.
Qualifications
PREFERENCES:
Preference may be given to candidates who have a Class A Commercial Driver's License with appropriate endorsements.
Must be able to obtain and maintain NCCCO certification within 12 months.
KNOWLEDGE:
- Knowledge of highway equipment and operations
- Knowledge of computer systems, work reporting requirements, and maintenance management practices specific to WYDOT.
- Knowledge and skill in the operation of the forklift, front-end loader, digger/derrick/crane trucks, man lift truck, and the electrical and hydraulic equipment that is run off of these trucks to get the signing operations complete along with other specialized equipment if needed
- Skill and Ability to communicate with co-workers, contractors, and the general public to complete daily, complex, and out-of-the-ordinary tasks safely and efficiently.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education & Experience Substitution:
2-4 years of progressive work experience (typically in Highway Maintenance/Highway Construction) with acquired knowledge at the level of a Highway Maintenance Technician
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:
Must have the ability to obtain a Class A Commercial Driver's License within (12) months of hire
OR Education: Associate's Degree (typically in Engineering)
Experience: 0-2 years of progressive work experience (typically in Highway Maintenance/Highway Construction) with acquired knowledge at the level of a Highway Maintenance Technician
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:
Must have the ability to obtain a Class A Commercial Driver's License within (12) months of hire
Necessary Special Requirements
PHYSICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:
- Individuals in this classification must be available for emergency work calls at any time, including nights, weekends, and holidays. Individuals must report to the Department Shop within 30 minutes of receiving the call. Acceptance of an appointment to this classification signifies that the individual is aware of this requirement and will comply with it. Failure to be available for emergency work, without an acceptable excuse, will be grounds for immediate disciplinary action and possible dismissal.
- Individuals in this classification will be subject to random drug and alcohol testing.
- Frequent use of manual and powered hand tools.
- Daily use of motor vehicles and heavy equipment.
- Frequent exposure to hazardous materials
- Ability to lift and/or carry 50 pounds independently.
- Ability to stand, sit, and operate equipment for long periods.
- Work in adverse environmental conditions, which may include but not be limited to rain, snow, heat, and hail.
- Ability to walk for long periods on even and uneven ground.
- Working around high-speed traffic and heavy construction equipment.
