Under the direction of the Assistant Chief Counsel, the Attorney is responsible for performing a variety of moderate to difficult legal work of the Department of Child Support Services (DCSS) relating to child support programs, child support services administration, and general operation of a state agency or department, including employee and personnel matters, contract review and drafting, fiscal and audit issues, and internal policies. The Attorney generally consults with and advises employees and managers within DCSS. The Attorney also collaborates with the Local Child Support Agencies (LCSAs) on legal issues. The Attorney is given some discretion and independence, depending on experience, in performing assigned duties. However, most legal work assigned to the Attorney is performed under the general subject matter direction and legal review of the Assistant Chief Counsel.

DCSS is a diverse, family-friendly organization. The headquarters office is located in Rancho Cordova convenient to Highway 50, with free parking, close to restaurants and shopping. The facility consists of standard office workspace, within a 2-story building, and may require sitting for long periods of time while using a personal computer, reviewing documents, and attending meetings. The position requires occasional travel to off-site meeting locations, conferences, or training. The work environment is fast paced and requires the incumbent to be flexible, use good time management practices, and effectively identify priorities to complete assignments timely.
Telework may be offered for this position under Government Code 14200 for eligible applicants residing in California; however, changes to the telework program are at the department’s discretion. Remote-centered employees may be required to report in person to Rancho Cordova headquarters and/or offsite events or locations, as determined by management, and will be required to utilize a shared workspace or “hotel” when working in the office.
