About the George W. Woodruff School of Mechanical Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology

The Woodruff School graduates high caliber mechanical engineers for a demanding profession. Mechanical engineers are the foundation of today's technological world. To do so, we provide enhanced facilities and laboratories to create the best learning environment and we attract outstanding faculty and students. In this period of rapid technological change, the Woodruff School produces mechanical engineers who are vital to our future. With approximately 3,000 students,100 faculty members, and 70 staff members, we are one of the largest mechanical engineering programs in the country. We are consistently ranked as one of the top 10 mechanical engineering programs in the U.S. at both the graduate and undergraduate levels and continuously innovate to keep our school at the forefront of engineering education. Job Summary



The George W. Woodruff School of Mechanical Engineering invites applications for a full-time academic professional. The Woodruff School is one of the largest and highest-ranked engineering programs in the nation, which houses both a Mechanical Engineering (ME) and a Nuclear and Radiological Engineering (NRE) program.

The academic professional position is a non-tenure track faculty position that combines administrative and teaching activities. The rank of the position (Associate Academic Professional, Academic Professional, or Senior Academic Professional) will be determined based on the qualifications and experience of the candidate. The primary administrative responsibilities of the person hired for this position are to focus on programs that enhance and enrich the undergraduate student experience, including:

  • Manage the Undergraduate Learning Studio, which supports students in need of academic help; they would also manage the student tutoring program which provides peer tutoring in most required undergraduate ME courses; build a support system for our first-generation college students.
  • Facilitate efforts regarding the alignment of the undergraduate curriculum with the Woodruff School Strategic Plan: Increase innovation in the curriculum by integrating new methods in data science for solving engineering problems, enhancing exposure to ethics throughout the curriculum, and introducing societal challenge topics within specific require classes of the curriculum
  • Coordinate the UG Research program which connects undergraduate students to various research projects; advise students wishing to participate in our BS/MS program.

Additionally, the position entails significant teaching responsibilities (2 courses per semester) with opportunities to serve as the lead instructor for the junior instructional laboratory course and the computing techniques course.

Required Qualifications

  • Associate Academic Professional
    • This rank may be used for individuals completing a terminal degree and for a period of two (2) years.
  • Academic Professional
    • This rank requires a completion of a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering or related field.
    • Significant related experience or promotion from the rank of Associate Academic Professional
    • Quality of performance and potential development must be recognized by peers
    • Prior credit may be awarded toward promotion
  • Senior Academic Professional
    • This rank requires a completion of a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering or related field.
    • Recognition by peers (whether national, regional, or local)
    • Successful and measurable related experience
    • Five (5) years or more as an Academic Professional
    • Prior credit may be awarded toward promotion

Preferred Qualifications



Given these responsibilities, the ideal candidate needs to have superior management skills as well as many years of engineering and educational experience. A design and manufacturing background is preferred.
