Peoria’s Finance Department has an excellent opportunity for a fixed term benefited Accountant. This position is responsible for providing accounting support to the Finance Department utilizing knowledge of accounting principles, applicable federal and state laws and industry standards and practices. Performs intermediate-level accounting activities including research, analysis, reconciliations and general ledger and subsidiary ledger maintenance. Assists with preparation of the City’s year-end audit and the Comprehensive Annual Financial Report (CAFR). Completes related tasks as assigned.
Additional responsibilities include:

  • Conducting research and providing accounting support to various departments
  • Reviewing and recording the City’s expenditures for proper ledger classification
  • Providing support to other functions and programs of the Financial Services Division
  • Participating in special projects as assigned

  • Be a CPA candidate, highly desired but not required
  • Have a positive attitude
  • Have a willingness to improve current processes
  • Possess excellent collaboration skills
  • Have excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Demonstrate strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail
  • Demonstrate strong Microsoft Excel skills and ability to learn new software

Minimum Requirements:

  • Education: : Bachelor's degree in Accounting or related field
  • Experience: Minimum of one year related experience. Requires a working knowledge of standard practices and procedures. Other combinations of experience and education that meet the requirements may be substituted.
Preferred / Desirable Qualifications:

  • Experience in a municipal or government setting.
