Job Description - Assistant Coach, Women’s Rugby

Job Description



Summary Queens University of Charlotte’s Royals began their four-year transition into the Division I ASUN Conference on July 1, 2022 and become the only North Carolina school to play in the ASUN.  

This position is considered a Responsible Employee for purposes of the university’s Sexual Misconduct Policy. As such, this position is required to report any incident of sexual misconduct or interpersonal violence to the university’s Title IX Coordinator when made aware of such.

This is a full-time, benefits-eligible,12-month position that reports to the Head Coach, Women’s Rugby. This position is exempt from provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and is not eligible to earn overtime pay or compensatory time off for additional hours worked. This position is not eligible for visa sponsorship.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include:

  • Adhere to the highest standards of student-athlete welfare.
  • Adhere to all NCAA, ASUN and University governing policies and procedures.
  • Assist head coach in day-to-day operations of the Women’s Rugby program.
  • Successfully identify and accurately assess the talent of Women’s Rugby athletes.
  • Assist with recruiting and scouting within NCAA regulations and Queens’ academic admissions standards, including develop database, call potential recruits, plan and organize recruiting trips, and accurately and timely complete all paperwork associated with those efforts.
  • Prepare and present comprehensive, accurate and timely scouting reports.
  • Effectively use various technologies (Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word, Instagram, Twitter, Facebook).
  • Assist student-athletes with individual performance and provide leadership/direction for improvements.
  • Assist with all aspects of game plan preparation, practice organization, and off-season training programs.
  • Participate in alumni relations, fundraising activities, and other program communication and relationship-management as appropriate.
  • Provide informal support to student athletes in academic and personal matters.
  • Participate in and assist with Women’s Rugby sport camps.
  • Must be able and willing to regularly work evenings and weekends and travel for competitions and recruiting to achieve objectives of the position.

Non-Essential Duties:

  • Other duties and special projects may be assigned to meet department or university needs.

Qualifications



Experience, Knowledge and Skills Required

  • Collegiate Rugby playing and/or coaching experience and ability to transfer the knowledge and skills gained to student athletes.
  • Basic knowledge and understanding of the professionalism and intensity necessary to successfully contribute to a Division I athletics program.
  • Solid knowledge of Microsoft Office products.
  • Successful proven experience with recruiting and scouting.
  • Knowledge of ASUN conference and NCAA rules and regulations.
  • Strong written and oral communication, interpersonal and leadership skills.
  • Proven track record of consistently modeling positive behaviors at all times.
  • Strong follow‐up and follow‐through skills as well as ability to plan, organize and control projects through to completion.
  • Proven ability to handle and maintain confidential information; familiarity with FERPA a plus.
  • Valid, unrestricted U.S. driver’s license, or ability to attain same by hire date.
  • Bachelor’s degree or the equivalent in experience and education.

Physical Requirements ( with or without reasonable accommodation )

  • Move about inside and outdoor playing and practice areas while communicating with student athletes, most of the time.
  • Requires frequent bending, moving, lifting, most of the time.
  • Remain in a standing position, most of the time.
  • Communicate with student athletes and co-workers, frequently. 
  • Ability to demonstrate the appropriate skills and techniques to be used by student athletes and ability to visually monitor athletes. 
  • Read reports, create presentations, use a computer system, some of the time 
  • Write, type, and use the computer, telephone, copier, and other office equipment systems, some of the time. 
  • Move about inside the sports performance space to access resources and office equipment, and attend meetings across campus, regularly. 
  • Exert moderate force to move objects, occasionally. 
  • Think critically, concentrate on the task at hand, and respond quickly to changes in conditions, most of the time.

Work Conditions

  • Must be willing and able to work a flexible schedule to meet requirements of the position, including early mornings, nights, and weekends.
  • Must be willing and able to travel (by car, bus, air, or other modes as appropriate; overnight stays) with the team to coach the team at away games, as well as travel to achieve recruiting goals.
  • Work in office environment and outdoors (in varying weather conditions), involving contact with faculty, staff, students, parents, service providers and vendors.
  • Work has deadlines, multiple interruptions, high volume and may be stressful at times.
