Job Description - Assistant Manager, Human Resources

  • Salary Range: $70,000-$80,000 Annual

The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training. The above hiring range represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.

Position Summary

Finance and Administration provides oversight and administrative support for Columbia University Facilities and Operations in its daily operations, manages budgeting and accounting, capital finance, residential finance and parking, and develops and produces organizational analyses to assist in long-term strategic planning.

Reporting to the Assistant Director, the Assistant Manager serves as a key resource in value-added solutions to achieve departmental objectives and goals.

Responsibilities

  • Reporting to the Assistant Director, and supervising the work of the HR Representative(s), the Assistant Manager, Human Resources develops and maintains a strategic partnership with the management team providing value-added solutions and recommendations on departmental objectives and goals.

  • As a subject matter expert in human resources, the Assistant Manager acts as the primary point of contact for all HR-related inquiries. Key responsibilities include managing onboarding and orientation for new hires, enhancing employee engagement and retention, identifying organizational needs, and devising effective action plans.

  • This position works closely with employees with questions related, but not limited to serving as an initial point on payroll, leaves status, employee relations, and time and attendance.  The incumbent serves as a liaison with internal and external constituents to resolve these issues and ensure timely processing of all transactions. In addition, the incumbent will make recommendations on best practices to meet employee needs.

  • Responsible for maintaining and updating departmental organization charts for all units. Provides guidance and consultation to management and staff on a broad range of human resources policies and procedures for the department. As needed, manages employee relations issues and performance improvement planning.

  • Serves as a key resource and actively participates in labor relations matters.

  • Performs other special projects and/or duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor???s degree and/or equivalent related experience required. 3-5 years related experience required.

  • Knowledgeable on applicable human resource program management principles and practices.  Some experience in employee relations principles and practices including conflict resolution techniques. Excellent oral and written communication and interpersonal skills are required.

  • Must be able to manage highly sensitive and confidential communications with discretion and integrity. Must be organized and detail and task-oriented with the ability to establish priorities and follow up on multiple issues in a time-sensitive manner.

  • Must be comfortable working under pressure and without supervision and demonstrate sound independent judgment. Ability to exercise a high degree of professionalism, diplomacy, discretion, firmness, and collaboration in dealing with individuals at all levels. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills necessary.

  • Excellent computer skills, including thorough knowledge of Microsoft Office, including knowledge of applicant tracking systems, databases, and advanced spreadsheet skills required. Must be able to quickly acquire knowledge of University policies, procedures, and systems.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Familiarity with PeopleSoft is a plus. Employee Relations experience preferred.
