Pay Rate: $23.77 - $25.95

ABOUT THE POSITION

This position is responsible for operating the day-to-day functions of the café, preparation of food and drinks, demonstrating barista craft, and other duties such as cash handling, cleaning, and maintenance. In addition to performing the requirements of the barista position this position leads, instructs, and checks the work of teammates, oversees the opening and/or closing service functions, and assists with tracking inventory.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities  include the following:

  • Welcome customers, answer questions, and take orders for beverages and food.
  • Accurately ringing in orders on POS system and writing on cups or bags.
  • Preparation of foods such as sandwiches or baked items, brewed coffee and tea, espresso-based beverages, etc. and serving items to customers.
  • Cleaning and restocking work and dining areas, emptying trash, and sanitizing equipment and utensils.
  • Learn about brewing methods, beverage blends, food preparation, and presentation techniques to improve food quality.
  • Update signage and displays to attract customers.
  • Take inventory and replenish items in display cases, at tables, or behind the counter.
  • Adhere to all food safety regulations and quality control.
  • Act as a liaison between the Café Manager and barista staff.
  • Lead and ensure all barista staff provide excellent customer service and barista craft.
  • Train newly hired barista staff.
  • Assist Café Manager with inventory management.
  • Collaborate with Programs staff regarding student work.
  • Complete daily schedule as assigned and ensure all barista staff are following their schedule and taking breaks.
  • Oversee the Café in the absence of the Café Manager.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

  • High School diploma or equivalent, one (1) year of food service experience, and one (1) year of barista experience; and/or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Valid King County Food Handler’s Permit or the ability to obtain one within
  • Basic proficiency in computer skills including ability to use Microsoft office, particularly word, outlook, and excel.
  • Ability to listen patiently and attentively, ability to express self clearly and effectively, and the ability to adapt communication based on audience and purpose with inclusivity.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team, within diverse teams and environments. 
  • Ability to employ best practices associated with the position, while displaying an on-going commitment to growth and self-development.
  • Ability to adhere to attendance and punctuality standards.
  • Ability to remain calm in a stressful, fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to take in new information and perspectives to inform and adapt work.
  • Ability to work a non-standard/flexible schedule, which may include weekends, evenings, and holidays.

  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud.

Physical Demands

  • This position is regularly required to stand for up to eight (8) hours or more near hot cooking elements.
  • This position is occasionally required to use tools as well as operational controls such as on POS and espresso machines.
  • This position requires the ability to reach with hands and arms and the ability to talk and hear.
  • This position requires close vision and the ability to adjust focus.
  • This position may occasionally be required to lift and/or move objects up to fifty (50) pounds.
  • This position may occasionally be required to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, or crouch.
