Department Responsibilities

This position is responsible for the management, administrative direction, and coordination of activities and staff for the University's Building Code within Environment Health & Safety. Ensures compliance and is responsible for the management of the Building Code enforcement. Acts as the University's Building Code Official.

  • Directs, executes, and reviews the technical, administrative, personnel and budgetary requirements of the University's EH&S program areas of Building to ensure compliance with regulations and university policy. Responsible for collaboration and cooperation in participation of strategic planning, staffing decisions, policy development and other key areas as a member of the EHS senior management team. This position will promote EHS' mission of reducing injuries, accidents, and environmental impact, and ensuring compliance while executing EHS' vision, values, and strategic plan.
  • As the Building Code Official, oversees and reviews protocols for the operations of the Building Code Office to ensure that construction and maintenance activities performed on university facilities comply with the appropriate regulations. Responsible for the timely identification and reporting of safety concerns and violations. Assists in foreseeing the evolving needs of the institution, researches possible solutions and assembles applicable information for decision making, planning, and formulating policies to operationalize new programs and modifications to existing programs as part of a collaborative team effort.
  • Independently performs building and campus inspections to ensure compliance with local, state, and federal requirements making recommendations to minimize potential environmental risks. Reviews internal and external audits, inspections and investigations of University operations and activities, laboratories and related facilities to ensure compliance with regulations and policy while continually assessing the potential for quality and customer service improvements. Conducts investigations to proactively promote a safe and healthy environment for all members of the FSU community. Responsible for policy making and delivery of EHS' safety practices to campus stakeholders.
  • Interacts with campus officials, local, state and federal authorities to ensure programs are achieving compliance through implementation of best practices while maintaining budgetary constraints. Continually works alongside the Fire Manager (Authority having jurisdiction) to approve permits collaboratively.
  • Participates in university activities, developing partnerships throughout the University in order to attain departmental goals and objectives. Serves on committees and participates in training programs through development, presentation, and attendance to ensure that relevant expert knowledge and specialized resources are being effectively utilized in addressing campus safety and health concerns.
Qualifications
  • Master's degree and four years of experience or a Bachelor's degree and six years of related experience or a high school diploma or equivalent and ten years of experience.
  • A valid Florida or Georgia Driver's License or the ability to obtain prior to hire.

  • Skill in preparing clear and concise reports, policies, procedures, correspondences, and other written materials.
  • Ability to develop and implement policies, procedures, goals, and objectives.
  • Ability to evaluate process effectiveness and develop change or alternatives.
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Ability to strategically plan and serve as a catalyst for organizational change, cultivate a shared vision with others, and motivate others to transfer vision into action.
  • Knowledge of University facilities and parking infrastructure.
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of project planning, development, and evaluation.
  • Knowledge of and ability to perform First Aid response.
  • Knowledge of applicable computer applications and basic computer functions.
  • Ability to use a firearm proficiently per standards set by the Criminal Justice Standards and Training Commission (CJSTC).
  • Ability to utilize problem solving skills.
  • Knowledge of and the ability to interpret and apply related University policies, procedures, principles, and practices.
  • Knowledge of and ability to interpret and apply related federal, state, and local laws, ordinances, rules and regulations.
