Job Description - Fish and Wildlife Technician P.I.

Job Description and Duties

Under supervision of the Wildlife Habitat Supervisor II, the incumbent will be a Fish and Wildlife Technician (Permanent – Intermittent) and perform the duties listed below on the Spencerville Wildlife Area and within the Cooperative Public Hunt Program working at one of the four Federal Hunt Check stations and may assist with similar duties within the North Central Region or Statewide. The goals of this position are to assist in the day-to-day management, operation and maintenance of the Area and hunt programs. Incumbent will be required to work weekends, holidays, and non-traditional hours. This position requires possession of a valid Driver’s License for the operation of motor vehicles in California.

The California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) is searching for enthusiastic candidates with a passion for California’s natural resources and a professional yet friendly attitude. This position will be working on the Spenceville Wildlife Area and the USFWS Sacramento National Wildlife Refuge Complex, which includes the Colusa, Delevan, Sacramento, and Sutter Refuges.

Perform Infrastructure maintenance and repairs on Department lands and facilities including habitat improvements and management. Coordinate and administer work of seasonal aids, volunteers and inmate help. Operate equipment such as wheel tractors, backhoes, excavators, dump trucks, four wheel drive vehicles, all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) etc. to accomplish those task associated with the operations of the Area and consistent with Department policy, goals and objectives, the Area’s management plan, various grants, agreements and work plans.

Act as a lead person for the Waterfowl hunt program, shift lead or lead at one of the Federal Refuges (Colusa, Delevan, Sutter, and Sacramento). Duties will include set up and take down of the hunt program facilities, processing and tracking of public hunters, answering public inquiries, training of seasonal and volunteers in day-to-day check station operations and on-the-job safety.

Working Conditions

Wildlife area setting. Spencerville Wildlife area is located in Yuba and Nevada Counties.

During Waterfowl season, the work location may be in Colusa, Glenn, or Sutter Counties.

Will be required to work on uneven terrain and in adverse weather conditions.

Work hours will vary including weekends, some holidays, and long shifts (up to 16 hours).

This position requires wearing a prescribed CDFW uniform.

Special Requirements

• Must possess a valid California Driver’s License.

• Education equivalent to completion of the 12th grade.

• Ability to lift 40 lbs.

• Willingness to work irregular hours, including nights and weekends.

Desirable Qualifications

In addition to evaluating each candidate's relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate:


• Good writing, communication and organizational skills.

• Familiarity with California waterfowl species identification.

• Comprehension of California public hunt programs and associated regulations.

• Basic computer skills including familiarity with Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel.

• Be at least 18 years of age.

• Ability to read and write English and to do simple arithmetic computations. Special Personal Characteristics: Good driving record; knowledge of fishing, hunting, or studying fish, wildlife, invertebrates, or plants; experience in camping, boating, and maintaining or repairing equipment.
