Job Description - Human Resources Business Partner

Human Resources Business Partner University of California Los Angeles Position Summary UCLA's Center for the Art of Performance (CAP UCLA) is dedicated to the advancement of the contemporary performing arts in all disciplines -- dance, music, spoken word and theater, as well as emerging digital, collaborative and cross-platforms -- by leading artists from around the globe. Our mission aligns with UCLA's mission of education, research and civic engagement by providing cultural, experiential programs that provoke inquiry and facilitate connection and creativity. Guided by our special relationship to both UCLA and the greater metropolitan area, CAP UCLA facilitates the exchange of art and ideas between artists and the community. The Human Resources Manager serves a vital role in managing all aspects of human resources for CAP UCLA and Theater Management Services (TMS): managing all aspects of the employment cycle including recruitment, hiring, onboarding, employee relations, and separation. Components of personnel management include the participation in strategic planning and analysis, application of employment practices, interpretation and application of policies, salary reviews, advisement on personnel actions, and payroll management. The successful candidate must thrive in a dynamic and varied work environment, understanding the unique needs of the performing arts and venue management; the ability to problem-solve and work with complex and layered systems; possess excellent interpersonal skills and patience as the primary contact for employee matters; and ideally, have a working knowledge and love of the arts. This position will supervise one direct report and act as a true partner to both departments in service of the theater in Royce Hall and the brand-new UCLA Nimoy Theater. Salary & Compensation *UCLA provides a full pay range. Actual salary offers consider factors, including budget, prior experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business considerations. Salary offers at the top of the range are not common. Qualifications
  • Demonstrates a working knowledge of UCLA staff personnel policies, payroll policies, procedures, organizational structure, and collective bargaining agreements. Also possesses knowledge and/or appreciation of visual and performing arts. (Preferred)
  • Skills in analyzing information, situations, practices, and procedures to define problems, identify relevant concerns, and formulate logical and objective conclusions. Also capable of developing internal personnel policies and procedures to support operational needs and practices. (Required)
  • Skill in performing tasks despite frequent interruptions, distractions, and can effectively work under conditions of fluctuating workloads. Additionally, ability to perform accurate and timely financial analysis and projections within a complex environment characterized by high-volume transactions. (Required)
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative relationships with senior-level administrators, staff, faculty, and students using tact and diplomacy. Also demonstrates writing proficiency in crafting concise, effective, and grammatically correct reports, statements, procedures, and correspondence. (Required)
  • Ability to use personal computers and Microsoft Office applications (Word, Access, Excel, Outlook, etc.), including running reports and queries. Demonstrates knowledge of accessing and navigating the Internet. Also, the ability to handle confidential material with judgment and discretion. (Required)
  • Ability to articulate policy on a one-to-one basis using appropriate vocabulary and grammar to provide information, explain policies and procedures, and answer questions. Also skilled in creating and collaborating effectively as part of a team with colleagues. (Required)
  • Ability to apply active listening skills to assess and diffuse emotionally charged situations in a calm, tactful, and professional manner. Also the ability to supervise, train, and coordinate the work of subordinates as necessary. (Required)
  • Working knowledge of standard personnel, payroll, and online functions, systems, and procedures, including processing personnel forms, benefits administration, and record management. Additionally, ability to attend to details, inspecting documents, and reports for accuracy. (Required)
  • Demonstrates mathematical and quantitative skills for calculating salaries, payroll documents, formulas, expense transfers, leave accruals, and payroll changes. Also, exhibits an understanding of the business ethics related to accountability and confidentiality inherent in HR Office operations. (Required)
  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality and enforcing the department's policies on confidentiality, record-keeping, and information release. Also, skilled in using electronic data resources, including utilizing data extraction techniques to prepare necessary personnel and financial reports. (Required)
  • Ability to prioritize and organize workload independently, ensuring timely completion of tasks based on their relative importance. Utilizes initiative and resourcefulness in executing assigned responsibilities and additional duties as required. (Required)
  • Knowledge of University personnel and payroll programs and policies, including UCPath, Time Reporting System (TRS), Online Financial System Reports (OFSR), Query Database (QDB), and the web-based PeopleAdmin System. (Required)

  • Background Check: Continued employment is contingent upon the completion of a satisfactory background investigation.
  • Live Scan Background Check: A Live Scan background check must be completed prior to the start of employment.
  • Age Requirement: Candidate(s) must be 18 years or older to be eligible to be hired.
