The Wayne County Juvenile Detention Facility is offering excellent opportunities for individuals interested in a career in the criminal justice field. The successful candidates will work in a modern, 10-unit housing detention facility and will function as part of a highly motivated, team-oriented group of detention specialist professionals. Specialist work in both direct and indirect supervision housing units. Specialists are solely responsible for the general supervision, safety and custody of up to 10 children per unit of the facility. Youth housed at JDF are awaiting adjudication, sentencing or placement. Educational services are provided through an on-site charter school. Additionally, on-site medical services, dental services, mental health services, appropriate recreational activities, counseling and behavior management activities are provided to young people housed in the Juvenile Detention Facility. This position offers competitive starting salaries and classification wage increases approved by the ASFCME Collective Bargaining Agreement. This position is a part of a career progression.
JOB REQUIREMENTS
Juvenile Detention Specialist 1 starting salary $53,898.00 (employees in this classification at the Juvenile Detention Facility currently receive a 35% premium on top of the base salary. Premium amount is included in the starting salary of $53,898.00)
A valid driver's license and an acceptable safe driving record is required for the position .

JOB DESCRIPTION
Juvenile Detention Specialists are responsible for: maintaining control and security of living quarters; instructing and supervising the youth in personal hygiene; counseling youth on personal behavior problems; and supervising the housekeeping activities of the youth in and about the facility and are also responsible for adhering to the rules and regulations of Michigan Child Care Institutions and the policies and procedures of the detention facility. Juvenile Detention Specialists are also responsible for documentation of activities and behavior; maintaining housekeeping; assisting in the feeding and providing necessary supplies and clothing.
NOTE: Applicants must describe their experience and training in sufficient detail to allow evaluation of their acceptability under the above qualifications.
SPECIAL CONDITIONS: Appointees must obtain a State of Michigan Chauffeur's license within their probationary period. Appointees who do not obtain the chauffeurs license will be removed from the Juvenile Detention Specialist position pursuant to the Department of Personnel/Human Resources procedures. As a condition of employment, appointees must:
1. Pass a DHHS Clearance and a Children's Protective Services History Review
(Below is a link to the DHHS Clearance Form, this document should be completed and taken to your local Michigan Department of Health and Human Services office for processing please make sure to have your State of Michigan Driver's License or ID with you).
2. Be willing to accept appointment to any one of the three shifts in any five-day work week schedule, Monday through Sunday, including holidays.
3. Have a medical examination and drug screen when hired and annually thereafter.
4. Agree to a criminal history check and subject to periodic criminal checks.
5. Have the ability to perform the prescribed functions as required by the Michigan State Child Licensing Rules, which specifically include, but are not limited to, the ability to provide for the continual needs and protection of residents which includes the ability to engage in the approved physical restraint techniques.
