Summary/Objective: The Library/Media and/or SMART Lab Associate assists in providing a well-organized, smooth functioning, information center that supports students as they strive to effectively use information and technology to become productive citizens and lifelong learners. May work together with the classroom teachers to provide a well-organized, smoothly functioning class environment in the library or SMART Lab. May assist students with software, provide lab skill lessons, and accommodate a wide range of activities, tools and materials. The associate is not expected to know all of the SMART Lab technology before starting the position. There will be a training period and ongoing support on both the technology and the curriculum.

Essential Functions
  • Facilitates day-to-day operations in the SMART Lab.
  • Collaborates and communicates with staff on student behavior and student time in the SMART Lab.
  • Coaches students on the use of lab hardware and software and guides students through the completion of projects.
  • Advocates for the program and works collaboratively with faculty members, students, and parents on the capabilities and use of the SmartLab.
  • Aids in the formation and future scope of this program.
  • Updates and maintains digital resources in the SmartLab.
  • Facilitates learning in a project-based classroom that blends online curriculum with hands-on projects.
  • Remains flexible and open to facilitating the use of an ever-changing set of SmartLab resources.
  • Circulates library information center, books, media, and other material to all students, staff and parents. Communicates with library information center users regarding status of their circulation records: provides circulation reports, class reports, overdue notices, and parent letters. Keeps patron records current. Maintains and updates patron records.
  • Assists staff and students with the operation of technology hardware, including but not limited to: computers, laser disc players, scanners, video cameras, VCRs, laminators, CD ROM drives, digital cameras, printers, fax machines, copiers, Alpha Smarts, unsophisticated video distribution systems.
  • Oversees the general appearance of library, including daily, seasonal, and special event displays of books and bulletin boards.
  • May participate in Duty Schedule once daily and Specials Duty rotation recess/lunchroom.
  • May be required to attend staff meetings and Building PD classes.
  • May be asked to be member of one committee and help supervise one student club (building expectation for all certified and classified.)
  • Recruits, organizes and gives directions to volunteers and staff for daily library jobs, book fairs, author visits, children's literacy clubs, special events and school wide activities.
  • Performs other SMART Lab and library information center-related duties as assigned.
Additional Qualifications: Experience with problem/project-based learning and/or STEAM education is preferred. Candidates must not be intimidated by new technology and must be able to help students figure out the answers to technology questions. Ability to communicate effectively and interact/deal tactfully with students, parents, volunteers, faculty and administrators. Ability to respond to urgent situations with flexibility and efficiency, while maintaining courteous and professional relationship with staff, students, parents, and public. Knowledge of basic library materials, terminology and routines, i.e., reference, circulation, etc. Knowledge of current technology, including Google Drive. Ability to use good emotional judgment and common sense. Ability to perform work with a high degree of accuracy. Bilingual (English/Spanish) helpful but not required in all schools. Ability to perform all functions of the position with an interest to learn.
