MENTAL HEALTH THERAPIST SENIOR (FT) - $5,000.00 HIRING INCENTIVE AVAILABLE!

Job Location:

  • The Adobe Mountain School is a secure care juvenile correctional facility for the custody, treatment, rehabilitation, and education of committed youth.
  • The Adobe Mountain School is fully accredited as a public education agency or school district and is located approximately 19 miles north of downtown Phoenix.

Job Summary:

  • The Arizona Department of Juvenile Corrections (ADJC) is searching for MENTAL HEALTH THERAPIST SENIOR candidates who are committed to making a difference in the lives of Arizona's youth.
  • Individuals who are ready for a rewarding career provide individual, group, and family counseling; assisting in the development of individual treatment plans; and evaluate high-risk/ suicidal youth.

Job Duties:

  • Providing individual, group, and family counseling sessions.
  • Evaluating high-risk/suicidal youth to determine the potential for self-injury or injury to others.
  • Administering, scoring, and interpreting psychological tests.
  • Attending team and/or board meetings to make recommendations regarding the release of youth.
  • Assisting in the development of individual treatment plans.
  • Making unit research recommendations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.


Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs):

Knowledge of:

  • Psychological testing in the areas of administration, scoring, interpretation, and report writing.
  • Methods, techniques, and procedures of psychological counseling and therapy.
  • Research methods and statistics.
  • Research design.

Skill in:

  • Written and verbal communication.
  • Case management and interpersonal relations.
  • Computer operation, and software to include Microsoft Office and Google Suites.
  • Establishing and maintaining professional work relationships.

Ability to:

  • Write effective summaries and reports.
  • Comply with Federal, State, and Agency rules and regulations.
  • Work closely with adjudicated youth in a secure institutional setting.
  • Manage stressful situations.
  • Drive on state business.
  • Work in a correctional environment.


Selective Preference(s):

MUST POSSESS:

  • A Master's Degree is required AND an Arizona Board of Behavioral Health Examiners (AZBBHE) license must be current and active to engage in the practice of behavioral health in the State of Arizona (See Arizona Revised Statute §32-3271-4) AZBBHE licensure is a condition of continued employment.* OR;
  • Completed course work toward Doctorate Program including completion of practicum hours in behavioral health.

The preferred candidate will have one or more of the following:

  • Two years of specialty treatment experience with juveniles or young adults in one or more of the following: Substance Abuse Treatment, Sexual Behavior, Mental Health, Severe Conduct Disorder.
  • Arizona Board of Behavioral Health Examiners (AZBBHE) license must be current and active to engage in the practice of behavioral health in the State of Arizona (See Arizona Revised Statute §32-3271-4) AZBBHE licensure is a condition of continued employment.

Pre-Employment Requirements:

  • Requires possession of, and ability to retain a current valid Arizona-issued driver’s license.
  • Employees who drive on state business are subject to driver’s license records checks, maintain acceptable driving records, and must complete any required driver training (see Arizona Administrative Code R2-10-207.12).


The selected candidate is required to successfully complete the following:

  • Panel Interview.
  • Comprehensive Background Investigation.
  • Fingerprinting.
  • Drug Screening.


Arizona residency is required for this position.


Current State of Arizona employees: In order to be considered for this position, it requires acceptable performance history as demonstrated by no formal discipline within one year preceding this job posting close date, and an overall rating of “meets expectations” or higher on the most recent employee performance evaluation.
