Opportunity Awaits, Apply Today! This is a limited duration position expected to end on 5/30/26. The goal of this recruitment is to fill this position at a Natural Resource Specialist 2. However, we encourage candidates who meet the minimum qualifications for a Natural Resource Specialist 1 to apply, as we may consider underfilling the position until the selected candidate meets the minimum qualifications for a Natural Resource Specialist 2. Underfill training will not exceed three years.

What we are looking for:

ODF is looking for a Natural Resource Specialist 2/Community Wildfire Forester. This position provides on-the-ground and administrative process coordination and leadership to fuels reduction projects. Duties may include:

  • Serves as liaison with rural fire districts, university extension agents, counties, and cities.
  • Provides technical and forest management advice to private landowners.
  • Develops and maintains effective project tracking systems and documents practices using GPS and GIS tools.
  • Through utilization of natural resource and fuels management knowledge, this position administers the multiple federal grant projects that ODF has secured.
  • Grant work requiring field work to administer, including contacting landowners in the forest, grant program explanation to those landowners, signing the landowner up in the program, checking the property, estimating amount of work to be done, answering landowners’ questions, checking project completion, and requesting payment/reimbursement/authorization.
  • Providing technical natural resource information to landowners on various hazard abatement options.

Minimum Qualifications NRS2:
Two years of experience in Forestry and/or a closely related natural resource program, and a bachelor’s degree in forestry and/or a closely related natural resource program.

OR

Three additional years of related (pertinent) experience

OR
One year of experience in Forestry, Wildland Fire, or a closely related natural resource program, and a master’s degree in forestry, Fire Science or a closely related natural resource program.

Minimum Qualifications NRS1 Underfill Option:

A bachelor's degree in Forestry and/or a closely related natural resource program

OR
Three years of experience in Forestry and/or a closely related natural resource program.

Note: Driver’s License Check - This position requires the operation of a state vehicle for the purpose of conducting official State business. If your license is from outside Oregon, you must submit at least a three-year court/DMV printout. If you have an Oregon driver’s license, a record check will be conducted on the top candidate to ensure a valid license and acceptable driving record.

  • Ability to complete, track and report federal grant work accurately and effectively.
  • Ability to work with landowners to develop scope of projects.
  • Ability to utilize GIS programs and data management.
  • Skill communicating verbally and in writing with a variety of people to answer questions and explain information.
  • Skill writing clear and concise status, summary, technical, or narrative reports.
  • Ability to work efficiently primarily in the field in an arduous work environment.
  • Ability to manage workload and schedule.
  • Ability to build working relationships with coworkers, landowners, operators, other agencies and cooperators.
