Job Description - Orthopaedic Biomechanics Faculty

The Department of Orthopedic Surgery at UT Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, Texas is seeking an outstanding scientist with a strong background in biomechanical engineering to establish robust translational research focused on clinically relevant musculoskeletal and Orthopaedic conditions. Applicants should have a Ph.D. or a Ph.D./MD degree (or equivalent Ph.D. degree in an engineering or engineering-related discipline) with a track record of success in extramural funding, publications, and collaboration with clinicians (with particular emphasis on scholarship relevant to biomechanics and medical imaging). We are especially interested in individuals with prior expertise in the utility of Bi-planner dynamic x-ray systems.

Appointment and academic rank will be determined based on the applicant’s qualifications. The successful candidate will be expected to develop an internationally recognized research program and participate in the teaching (residents training) and service missions of the Department. We are especially interested in candidates who will provide inspirational leadership in research and teaching (mentorship) and engage in collaborative opportunities within the department and across the institution. The potential faculty will have the chance to collaborate with the clinical biomechanics’ faculty at the newly established Mobility Research Unit as well as the faculty at the Advanced Imaging Research Center. In addition to working with orthopaedic trainees, the faculty will have access to graduate students from UT Southwestern’s newly established Biomedical Engineering Department and undergraduate and graduate students from the Department of Bioengineering at UT Dallas’ Erik Jonsson School of Engineering and Computer Science.

Orthopaedic Surgery together with Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and Cardiology, houses the newly established Mobility Research Unit, a 6,000-square-foot research unit located in an ambulatory care facility, advantageous for the recruitment of study participants. The Mobility Research Unit consists of a Gait and Motion Analysis Laboratory, a Bi-planner Dynamic X-ray Laboratory, a Physical Performance Laboratory, a Human Electrophysiology laboratory, and a Neuromodulation laboratory. We anticipate that the research activity of the successful applicant will be conducted under the Mobility Research Unit.

The orthopaedic faculty provide clinical care at Clements University Hospital of UT Southwestern Medical Center (751 beds), Parkland Memorial Hospital (862 beds), Children’s Medical Center Dallas/ Texas Scottish Rite Hospital (496 beds), and the North Texas Veterans Administration Medical Center (279 beds). UT Southwestern is rated as a “high performing” orthopaedic facility according to US News and World Report, and Children’s/Texas Scottish Rite is perennially ranked as one top pediatric orthopaedic programs according to US News and World Report. Thirty orthopaedic residents and 45 faculty members are part of the department, and all subspecialties of orthopaedic surgery are represented. Currently, two of the orthopaedic faculty are “clinician scholars,” with 50% of their time devoted to research.
