A clinical epidemiology group in the Vaccine and Infectious Disease Division is recruiting a master-level Predoctoral Research Associate to work on several projects relating to HIV prevention. The candidate will be involved in a research project described below.
The research project involves methods for estimating counterfactual HIV incidence. Multiple biomedical HIV prevention modalities, including PrEP formulated as oral tablets or as vaginal rings, have recently been shown to be safe and highly effective. While availability of these products greatly improves the prevention landscape, it renders traditional gold-standard trial designs difficult to use for evaluation of new HIV prevention agents, owing to ethical (i.e., inactive/placebo-controlled trials) and/or feasibility (i.e., non-inferiority trials) concerns. Several potential alternative strategies have been advanced for defining a counterfactual placebo condition in future HIV prevention trials of new agents. One such approach involves the construction of a dataset describing a synthetic cohort of subjects enrolled in recently completed trials for women in sub-Saharan Africa who did not receive a study intervention. The Predoctoral Research Associate will work on estimating counterfactual HIV incidence in sub-cohorts 'matched' to the target populations in intervention studies. The "matching" will be based on location, age, and risk factors and further adjustment on PrEP use will be conducted.
In addition, the candidate will be expected to produce manuscripts for publication as well as grant applications and study protocols. The candidate must be responsible, organized, and self-motivated, and able to efficiently manage time and experiments.
A statement describing your commitment and contributions toward greater diversity, equity, inclusion, and antiracism in your career or that will be made through your work at Fred Hutch is requested of all finalists.
