Job Description - Principal Network & Security Engineer

The Principal Network & Security Engineer supports a small team of security focused engineers within a larger Network and Security Engineering team. The successful candidate maintains, configures, upgrades, and assists with design and implementation of technologies that secure our enterprise network. This position requires a keen customer-first focus and demonstrated ownership that drives issues to resolution, regardless of root cause. Key to success will be the application of interpersonal skills and ability to foster and grow business relationships in daily interaction with internal and external customers. The successful candidate will be an expert troubleshooter with strength in all layers of the OSI stack.

  • Build processes and operational best practices for the automation framework used by the team to improve network reliability.
  • Collaborate with Enterprise Architects to develop solutions to meet business requirements, including developing RFPs, vendor evaluations, industry research, production evaluation, and proofs of concept.
  • Evangelize security program fundamentals across the OSI model and acts as a consultative partner with Enterprise IT and Business teams.
  • Ensure appropriate collection and analysis of technical, functional requirements based on customer use cases and business requirements into security design deliverables.
  • Design and implement security controls that are built and engineered to meet compliance requirements, including internal controls, as well as SOX and PCI controls (to include IPS/IDS, URL Filtering, and DDoS protection).
  • Design, configure, and troubleshoot site-to-site IPSEC VPNs on router and firewall platforms.
  • Engineer, design, test and deliver scripts to automate manual operational work.
  • Designs, configures, and troubleshoots DMVPN and SDWAN topologies.
  • Composes and writes detailed design and customer documentation.
  • Contributes to the continuous process improvement life cycle that drives operational excellence.
  • Remains informed of trends and changing technologies as they relate to the field of Information Security.
  • Participates in team after hours and on-call rotation as required.

Required

  • 7 years of hands-on experience managing enterprise network topologies with Cisco IOS/NXOS, Junos OS route/switch infrastructure and FortiNet firewalls or related experience.
  • Bachelor’s degree with a focus in computer science or a related discipline; or an additional 2 years in lieu of this degree with CCNP – CCIE level certifications.
  • Operational experience supporting infrastructure security controls with hands-on experience in the following technologies: WAFs, IDS/IPS, Antivirus, File Integrity Monitoring, DLP, IDM/IAM, Encryption is required.
  • Experience supporting enterprise environments of at least 5,000 users is required.
  • Demonstrated comfort working within a highly critical data center environment, with absolute adherence to change control processes.
  • Demonstrated understanding of IP protocols at all layers of the OSI and IP Standards is required.
  • Ability to interpret data captures and debug at the packet level is required.
  • Working knowledge of infrastructure components; cloud, compute, database and storage.
  • Experience diagnosing performance issues in complex distributed applications.
  • Knowledge of Traffic Engineering and Capacity Management is required.
  • Ability to work under pressure in a highly team focused environment is required.
  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Minimum age of 18.
  • Must be authorized to work in the U.S.

Preferred

  • CCSA and/or CCSE and/or CCNP Security and/or CCNP Security professional certification(s).
  • Experience with Microsoft Excel and Visio is preferred.
  • Excellent verbal, writing and presentation skills are preferred.

$130,900 - $202,900 / year



Pay will be based on multiple factors, including and not limited to location, relevant experience/level and skillset while balancing internal equity relative to other Alaska/Horizon employees. Alaska/Horizon is committed to fair, unbiased compensation along with competitive benefits in all locations in which we operate.
