Job Description - Research Support Coordinator

Research Support Coordinator - Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) - Georgetown University Located in a historic neighborhood in the nation's capital, Georgetown offers rigorous academic programs, a global perspective, exciting ways to take advantage of Washington, D.C., and a commitment to social justice. Requirements Research Support Coordinator - Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) - Georgetown University Job Overview The Research Support Coordinator provides critical and regulatory support to the Georgetown Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) and the IACUC Director; and provides post-approval monitoring (PAM) of IACUC research protocols. As well, they monitor the progress of IACUC protocols throughout the review process to ensure regulatory processes are followed and items are processed efficiently. Primary duties include but are not limited to:

  • Manages and coordinates the post approval monitoring program for animal research protocols; and drafts reports outlining audit finding and corrective actions
  • Conducts quality review of IACUC submissions (new protocols, amendments, annual reviews, renewals) for accuracy and completeness; and ensures regulatory requirements have been addressed
  • Maintains inventory of protocol/amendment status throughout the IACUC review process
  • Communicates IACUC actions and requirements to appropriate stakeholders
  • Ensures accuracy, updates and manages protocols, renewals, amendments, annual reviews, and associated review activities in the online protocol submission system - from submission to approval
  • Serves as point of contact for the research community for IACUC processes, regulations (USDA, OLAW, AAALAC), IACUC policy and the IACUC electronic system
  • Provides education and training to committee members, faculty researchers, and staff
  • Maintains records of IACUC business (items reviewed and business conducted); and executes actions as a result of committee decisions
  • Assists with quality assessments of IACUC processes and electronic system, provides solutions for improvement, and assists in the implementation of any changes
  • Compiles reports of research data for stakeholders - both internal (for example, IACUC, senior management) and external stakeholders (for example, AAALAC)
  • Assists with the review, creation and implementation of IACUC policies and procedures
  • Assists with semi-annual inspections
  • Works under time constraints and multitasks; and handles sensitive matters with discretion and tact while maintaining confidentiality
  • Learns new tasks and functions quickly, accurately, and efficiently as new projects arise
  • Actively participates in meetings and subcommittees




Work Interactions and Work Mode Designation


Reporting to the IACUC Director, the Research Coordinator assists in all activities required by the laws and regulations for animal research.


They apply their positive communications skill, they interact with all investigators, IACUC staff, other departments and IACUC members - and with investigators, regulatory officials, and the general public.


The Research Coordinator has no direct reports.


This position has been designated as Hybrid . Please note that work mode designations are regularly reviewed in order to meet the evolving needs of the University. Requirements and Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a scientific field or combination of education and training/experience in animal research
  • 3 to 5 years related experience [ note: consideration will be given to an equivalent combination of education and experience described ]
  • Ability to exercise independent judgment and discretion when assisting stakeholders
  • Ability to comprehend complex IACUC applications and to adapt to often-changing policy and regulatory requirements
  • Knowledge of animal handling and surgical techniques
  • Knowledge and understanding of biomedical terminology
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail




Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge of federal laws, policies, and regulations governing the care and us of research animals - e.g., USDA/AWA, OLAW/PHS Policy
  • Experience in the use of electronic data management systems
  • Positive interpersonal communication skills when dealing with investigators, regulatory officials, and the general public
