Position Overview

The Division of Mental Health is Seeking to hire a Security Officer Sergeant for the Chester Mental Health Center located in Chester, Illinois to provide safety and protection services to the facility patients and staff on the grounds of the facility on an assigned shift. Serves as designated lead worker. Verifies that certain job assignments are performed as per the facility’s policies, regulations, rules, and guidelines. Supervises and conducts regular and periodic inspections ensuring that all doors and windows are secure. Supervises and drives state owned vehicles to pick up and deliver mail, make bank deposits, pharmacy runs, or to pick up items ordered by patients. Travels in the performance of job duties.

Job Responsibilities

  1. Provides safety and protection services to the facility patients and staff on the grounds of the facility on an assigned shift.
  2. Serves as designated lead worker.
  3. Verifies that certain job assignments are performed as per the facility’s policies, regulations, rules and guidelines.
  4. Supervises and conducts regular and periodic inspections ensuring that all doors and windows are secure.
  5. Supervises and provides access and exit of patients to recreation area ensuring a proper count at all times.
  6. Supervises and drives state owned vehicles to pick up and deliver mail, make bank deposits, pharmacy runs, or to pick up items ordered by patients.
  7. Supervises and assists, upon request, internal operations in cases of emergency or other serious security situations.
  8. Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.

Minimum Qualifications

  1. Requires knowledge, skill, and mental development equivalent to the completion of high school.
  2. Requires one year of experience in safety and protection service or a related field.

Preferred Qualifications

  1. Three (3) years of professional experience working with security requirements and regulations for a public or private organization.
  2. Three (3) years of professional experience working with emergency response procedures including fire safety and controls for a public or private organization.
  3. Three (3) years of professional experience participating/conducting investigations into allegations of burglaries, vandalism, patient injuries, and traffic accidents.
  4. Three (3) years of professional experience providing leadership, directing, and supervising staff for a public or private organization.
  5. Three (3) years of professional experience preparing reports.
  6. Three (3) years of experience communicating effectively both orally and in writing.

Conditions of Employment

  1. Requires the ability to become OIG rule 50.3 certified within 90 days of employment.
  2. Requires the ability to respond to an emergency situation and to answer fire alarms.
  3. Requires a valid driver’s license.
  4. Requires the ability to travel.
  5. Requires the ability to utilize office equipment, including personal computers.
  6. Requires ability to pass the IDHS background check.
  7. Requires ability to pass a drug screen for drugs prohibited from recreational use under Illinois Law.
