Job Title: Certified Speech Language Pathology Assistant

Salary Range: $22.75 - $27.54

Reports to: Building Principal or Designee

Please note that this position is 183 days with 6 paid holidays, paid sick leave and paid flexible personal leave (3 days per year). If hired after the start of the school year, days and leave are pro-rated. Job Summary:

To improve student achievement by assisting a licensed speech-language pathologist in the implementation of a program for students in need of speech services. To perform instructional activities in support of the prescribed plan for students; assisting in providing a safe, healthy educational environment for students and performing other duties as assigned.

This position requires certification and experience as a speech-language pathology assistant. This position under the direction of an SLPA provides direct speech services to students.

Essential Job Functions:

Planning and Preparation

  • Assists in developing specific instructional programs and activities for children and students as directed by a licensed speech-language pathologist.
  • Follows prescribed daily schedule as suggested by the licensed speech-language pathologist.
  • Maintains and records appropriate data for special instructional programs set up by licensed speech language pathologists.
  • Assists the licensed speech-language pathologist in scheduling appropriate meetings and assisting with the completion of required paperwork for meetings.
  • Develops and implements materials needed for instruction.

Implementation:

  • Implements and monitors IFSP/IEP goals, objectives and activities under the direction of a licensed speech-language pathologist and adjusts instruction according to feedback from pathologist or administrator.
  • Operates audiometer to perform hearing screenings.
  • Assists the licensed staff in establishing a safe and secure learning environment that is responsive to assigned children or students’ needs.

Assessment and Use of Assessment Information:

  • Demonstrates knowledge and use of a variety of data collection techniques.
  • Provides appropriate/constructive timely feedback to children or students to enhance learning.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of and use of a variety of assessment/screening tools effectively under the direction of the licensed speech-language pathologist.

Communication:

  • Consistently communicates with supervising speech-language pathologists regarding specialized programs and results from the sessions.
  • Provides routine notes and feedback.
  • Communicates clearly with parents, other school staff, pathologist and administration regarding children or students as directed by licensed staff.
  • Seeks additional information from licensed pathologists or administrators as warranted.
  • Supervises individual students, classroom and/or playground activities for the purpose of providing a safe and positive learning environment. Takes steps to intervene when students are not in control, not in the proper location, or may be in dangerous or unsafe situations.
  • Responsible for being familiar with the school/district policies and procedures which govern the work.
  • Prompt and regular attendance is required.

Other Job Functions:

  • Maintains classroom equipment, materials, and students’ files, records, etc. for the purpose of ensuring availability of items as may be required.
  • Confers, under the supervision of the teacher, with teachers, parents, and/or appropriate community agency personnel for the purpose of assisting in evaluation of students' progress and/or implementing of students' objectives. Exercises discretion and assures protection of student confidentiality consistent with the direction and guidance of staff, administrators, and school/district policies and procedures.
  • Performs other tasks as assigned.
  • Assists other personnel as may be required for the purpose of supporting them in the completion of their work activities.
  • Participates in various meetings and professional development activities for the purpose of sharing information and/or improving one's skills/knowledge.
  • Assists with the transition of students, including supervision of students to and from the bus, supervision of loading and unloading of buses, and supervision of students to and from classes.

Essential Job Requirements - Qualifications:

  • Education Required: Associate's degree (A.A.) or equivalent from two-year college or evidence of successful completion of a paraprofessional examination AND
  • Speech-Language Pathology Assistant (SLPA) Certificate issued by the Oregon Board of Examiners for Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology.
  • Ability to work with a diverse population.
  • Ability to respect confidential information.
  • Computer skills to include use of word processing programs, database programs and the Google Suite of products.

Experience and Training:

Experience: One year of service as a speech-language pathologist assistant.

Training: Per the Oregon Board of Examiners for Speech-Language Pathology Assistant Certificate

  • Official transcripts showing 45 quarter hours or 30 semester hours of speech-language pathology technical course work taken within the last 7 years.
  • Official transcripts showing 45 quarter hours or 30 semester hours of general education credit
  • Written evidence of 100 clock contact hours of clinical interaction.
  • Licenses, Certifications, Bonding, and/or Testing Required: Oregon Department of Education Fingerprint Clearance.
  • Language Skills - Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedural manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of students, staff and parents.
  • Reasoning Ability- Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form.
  • Other skills and abilities - Works well with others. Focuses on solving conflict; maintains confidentiality; listens to others without interrupting; keeps emotions under control; remains open to others’ ideas; and contributes to building a positive team spirit. Works well in the presence of children.
  • Cultivate and model a respectful working and learning environment.

Physical Demands:
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to walk; sit, and use hands for fine manipulation, handle or feel and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to stand and stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, and peripheral vision.

Terms of Employment: 9+ months. Performance of this position will be evaluated annually in accordance with Board policy on evaluation of classified staff.
