Job Description - Survey Technician

POSITION DUTIES AND QUALIFICATIONS 

SUMMARY OF DUTIES:

Assists with technical land surveys by setting up instruments for sight elevations and measurements, determining boundaries and elevations, and assisting with data collection and field notes.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:*

The Survey Technician at the City of Tucson’s Department of Transportation & Mobility assists survey crew members and participates and provides assistance in the surveying of roads, building sites, bridges, environmental sites, and determinations of land boundaries under the guidance of a professional surveyor. 

Work is performed under the supervision of a Land Surveyor. This position does not supervise.

Duties and Responsibilities

Survey Tasks (45%) - Essential
Performs survey work assignments including setting points for measurements, running bench circuits, cross sectioning roads, searching for section corners, property pins, survey control points, and cutting brush for lines.

Survey Equipment Operation (30%) - Essential
Stages and prepares surveying instruments for basic operation including the Global Positioning System (GPS), total station and level. Utilizes survey tools to search property pins, section corners and survey control points.

Data Collection and Calculations (20%) - Essential
Collects and records measurements of various information pertinent to carry out a new survey. Uses engineering plans to compile information necessary to stake projects for construction or, from a map or plat. Performs simple calculations to determine grades, bearing and azimuths, level runs, property and boundary markers.

Other Duties as Assigned (5%) - Non-Essential
Performs other duties and tasks as assigned

MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:
High school diploma or equivalent

Work Experience:
Under one (1) year of directly related experience

Any combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.

ADDITIONAL MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:
High school diploma or equivalent

or a related field.

One (1) year of directly related experience

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience in reading and interpreting maps and plats
  • Experience in performing basic calculations
  • Experience in land surveying or related field
