Job Description - Vocational trainer

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

  Come Join the Wyoming Department of Corrections. The Wyoming Medium Correctional Institution is seeking a Graphics Vocational Trainer. The job entails overseeing a team of inmate workers at the Correctional Industries Graphics Shop. The Graphics Shop offers a range of services such as graphic design, embroidery, engraving, and janitorial supplies. The primary responsibilities of this role involve providing vocational training and managing the day-to-day operations of the shop, which includes creating promotional materials, maintaining accurate records, ensuring high-quality manufacturing, and developing new products. Additionally, the position will involve supporting other Correctional Industry Shops as needed. The Wyoming Medium Correctional Institution (WMCI) is specifically designed to serve as the central intake and assessment center for male inmates. Additionally, it serves as a primary education and treatment center for inmates identified as requiring high levels of protective custody and medical, mental health, dental, substance abuse, life skills, cognitive/behavioral, and/or sex offender treatment services. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The listed functions are illustrative only and are not intended to describe every function which may be performed at the job level.

 

  • Administers and interprets vocational and pre-vocational evaluations.
  • Provides meaningful and productive hands-on classroom training on a vocation or trade and training for lead man/tutors.
  • Develop training objectives, standards, lesson guides, study materials, checklists, and other essential items to ensure quality training is meeting the needs of students/inmates.
  • Facilitates workshops and other meetings to evaluate department policies and procedures.
  • Administers testing for students/inmates.
  • Maintains vocational and education files, following departmental regulations.
  • Instructs workers and staff in training program methods and data collection.
  • Research develops new training manuals for the department, production processes, and time management. 
  • Supervises and manages day-to-day functions of Vocational and Industries programs, shop data, product lines, and inventory levels.
  • Utilizes quality control process to ensure the finished goods meet specifications. 
  • Tracks and monitors floor production.
  • Works within established budgets and monitors revenues and expenses for the cost account center. 
  • Monitor, maintain, complete, and track production-related reports, weekly reports, production scheduling, inventory usage, and daily, weekly, and monthly inventories of equipment, tools, supplies raw goods, work in progress, and finished goods and track items being shipped.
  • Team projects.
  • Participate in WBI Sales, make sales calls, customer contacts, and deliver products. 
  • Attends professional development related to subject areas.
  • Adheres to state, facility, vocational, and federal student/inmate education program guidelines.


PREFERENCES:   Preference may be given to those with 2-4 years of experience in industrial production, industrial manufacturing, graphic design, supervisory and knowledge of textile manufacturing, and knowledge in textile manufacturing, embroidering, sewing, or manufacturing industries.   



KNOWLEDGE:

 

  • Knowledge of concepts, principles, methods, and techniques of a vocational trade.
  • Knowledge of basic principles of education, psychology, human development, and counseling techniques.
  • knowledge of proper use of tools, equipment, and OSHA standards
  • Knowledge of job coaching techniques; record-keeping and data collection; employment counseling and direction; and quality assurance.
  • Knowledge of quality control standards.
  • Knowledge of basic business concepts.

  MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
 


Education:

Bachelor's Degree (typically in Education)

 

Experience:

0-1 year of progressive work experience (typically in Education or Instruction) with acquired knowledge at the level of a Vocational Training Technician

 

OR

 

Education & Experience Substitution:

3-4 years of progressive work experience (typically in Education or Instruction) with acquired knowledge at the level of a Vocational Training Technician

PHYSICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Must stand and walk on a concrete floor for long periods. 
  • The candidate may be required to lift up to 65 pounds.
  • Candidates must be able to lift or retrieve items, move materials and boxes from overhead locations or shelves onto or off of vehicles, and in and out of storage areas outside the facility.
