Departmental Overview The College of Computing, Data Science, and Society (CDSS) is a dynamic, innovative new college at UC Berkeley that represents a once-in-a-generation transformation. The College brings together faculty, researchers, staff and students from computing, statistics, the humanities, and social and natural sciences, mirroring the cross-cutting nature of data science and redefining the research university for the digital age. Core to the College Is a commitment to examining how the digital revolution affects equity and opportunity—and building the capacity to respond to these challenges. CDSS was created to meet the opportunities and demands of a world where data, machine learning, and artificial intelligence inform practice and policy in virtually every arena. The College connects the Data Science Undergraduate Studies program, Department of Electrical Engineering & Computer Sciences, Department of Statistics, the Berkeley Institute for Data Science, Computational Precision Heath, and the Center for Computational Biology. The College is responsible for growing Berkeley's broad-based undergraduate programs in data science, computing, statistics and other interdisciplinary programs, including classes and programs serving thousands of undergraduate students a year. The CDSS Events Manager plays a key role in planning and managing moderately complex events for the College of Computing, Data Science, and Society (CDSS) involving faculty, staff, students, alumni, donors, and partners from varied institutions, including academic, research, public, nonprofit institutions, industry, and private sector. Application Review Date The First Review Date for this job is: 3/6/24 - Open Until Filled Responsibilities 45% Oversees short-term and long-range event planning for the college; develops, updates, and maintains event planning resources and templates. Creates and maintains a calendar of events. Supports planning and research for new and regular events, which may include: research symposia, community-building events, student programs, donor outreach, etc. Conducts research regarding tools and resources the college can use for future conferences, symposiums, and events. 25% Provides comprehensive event planning for college events, and provides event support for collaborative events with campus and other partners. Plans, organizes, and identifies potential event locations and vendors. For on-campus events, secures necessary permits and certificates of insurance in accordance with UC policy. Manages contracts for venues, catering, design/marketing, audio/visual needs, registration, and other event logistics. Determines and coordinates staffing needs, securing the cooperation of staff and/or student volunteers. 25% Consults with clients on all details regarding events.Develops, implements, and maintains detailed record of event budgets, registration, parking needs, marketing/promo materials, pack list, etc. Guides and implements communications/marketing and planning timelines in collaboration with colleagues. Tracks progress of events, conferring with stakeholders regarding event goals and objectives. 5% Career Development: Attends classes and workshops that enhance expertise in event planning such as the UCCareer Development: Attends classes and workshops that enhance expertise in event planning such as the UC Berkeley Event Planning Certification Program. Required Qualifications
  • Thorough knowledge and understanding of concepts, principles and practices of event
  • Skill in effectively meeting budget and time constraints.

  • Bachelors' degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Thorough knowledge of the campus, its vision, mission, programs, policies, achievements and infrastructure. Knowledge of University policies and procedures relating to the use of University facilities, event management and presentation.
  • Demonstrated organizational and project management skills to work successfully with clients to produce high-quality events that meet client needs and appropriately represent the campus for fundraising events. Skills to provide excellent donor stewardship.
  • Knowledge of principles and practices of volunteer recruitment, supervision, motivation and evaluation.

This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience. The budgeted salary that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $70,100 - $86,800, not to exceed $124,700 (grade 21).
