Job Description - Explosives Technician

Applied Research Associates/Test Technology Division (ARA/TTD) has an immediate full-time opening for an Explosives Technician position. We are located at Kirtland Air Force Base (KAFB) Albuquerque, New Mexico where ARA has provided explosive operations for research and development continuously for over 30 years. In this role you will help us conduct explosive operations and field testing. In addition to your technical role, you will assist with purchasing, property inventory, shipping and receiving, and facility maintenance.

You will be working with other Technicians, Scientists, and Engineers in supporting significant explosive testing programs. This includes handling and detonating commercial, military, and novel explosive materials. You will also be installing firing system cabling and equipment and fielding explosives at four primary test sites at KAFB, White Sands Missile Range NM, Moriarty NM, Fort Stockton TX, and other remote explosive test locations. You will help build test articles, set up test beds, perform tests, and report results.

This position requires some travel to conduct testing at remote sites using specialized equipment. You will be contributing to test planning, preparation, execution, and reporting. You will assist in the storage of explosives to include inventory, security, inspections, and maintenance. This includes handling testing logistics such as purchasing materials and keeping an inventory of equipment. Forklifts, backhoes, and other heavy equipment, as well as hand tools and power tools, will be used to construct test fixtures and assemble hardware.

Requirements:

  • Relevant technical training.
  • Be able to safely use hand tools and basic power tools.
  • Be able to lift 50 lb.
  • Ability to work outside and in adverse conditions.
  • Be familiar with basic explosive safety principles.
  • Read and interpret explosive safety procedures and operating instructions.
  • Read and interpret government regulations as they pertain to all phases of explosive operations.
  • Effectively communicate and work with the team.
  • Work in a Research and Development and Testing environment mostly without written work instructions or procedures.
  • Must be a United States citizen and have, or be capable to obtain, a Secret or higher Department of Defense Security Clearance.
  • Must have or be able to obtain a Commercial Driver’s License with Hazardous Materials endorsement.
  • Knowledge on high voltage firing systems, remote firing systems, and exploding bridge wire detonators is preferred.
