Departmental Overview UC Berkeley Summer Sessions, Study Abroad & Lifelong Learning (SSALL) is committed to providing academic departments with the fundamental tools to build successful and inspiring courses and programs. Departments have the unique opportunity to reach out to a diverse culture of students looking to join the Berkeley community, and SSALL aims to prepare each department with a comprehensive list of resources. Summer hiring and course scheduling, study abroad resources, departmental support funds, and marketing tools are just a few of the resources SSALL encourages all academic departments to take advantage of to achieve their respective goals. Application Review Date The First Review Date for this job is: 3/5/2024 Responsibilities Involves managing or performing the administrative services or managing the full general operations of an academic or non-academic organization(s). Responsible for applying advanced student services expertise and managing the academic, logistical, and administrative operations of the Pre-College Scholars program, including Residential, Virtual, Commuter, and Non-credit tracks. General management includes coordination of advising, programming, recruitment, formulating long and short-range strategic planning strategies, and administering policies, processes, and resources; functions with a high degree of autonomy.
  • Responsible for applying advanced student services expertise and managing the academic, logistical, and administrative operations of the Pre-College Scholars program including Residential, Virtual, Commuter, and Non-credit tracks. Collaborate and coordinate with numerous interdepartmental & campus central units such as Student Services, Marketing, Center for Educational Partnerships, and Office of Undergraduate Admissions to facilitate the delivery of the program. Performs long and short term planning for function including collecting and assessing survey feedback and recommending program and policy improvements. Also includes management of staff to support administrative, advising, operational, and programmatic efforts. Supports monitoring and budgetary efforts and resources.
  • Co-curricular/Extra-curricular Programming: Manages, plans, and advises department and program staff on summer experiential learning opportunities and activities; Develops and enhances an alumni recruitment network. Utilizing an in-depth knowledge of the field to organize and counsels students on co/extra-curricular opportunities and practices. Plans, designs, and provides workshops for students, such as information about the campus, or academic strategies and enrichment programs. Events: Plans and implements complex, high-visibility student events, such as open houses and program orientations. Program Course Scheduling: Devises curricular and co-curricular planning in collaboration with internal and external partners in various tracks to ensure students' progress through program avoiding conflicts, and ensuring compliance with campus-wide & program policies.
  • Academic Advising: Identifies and refers for resolution to intricate student enrollment and course inquiries, issues/grievances related to eligibility and course restrictions. Oversees administrative and policy updates to the website, Zendesk Help Center, and other program related systems.
  • Recruitment and Admissions: Coordinates/develops outreach, accessibility, and recruitment activities and helps identify targeted partnerships, community-based organizations, and other opportunities to meet the organization's access goals. Develops short and long-range outreach planning and consults with recruitment and team to recommend improvements to strategy.
  • Department Policies: Advises academic and campus partners/counselors on policy by advising them on areas needing clarification and identifying solutions; analyzes the consequences of organization's academic policies and recommends new or changed policies; recommends solutions to organization's problems without precedent.
  • Participates in ad hoc projects and professional student services committees that develop policies/procedures with nationwide impact.Represents the department on business affairs to the institution community.
Required Qualifications
  • Advanced knowledge of advising and counseling techniques.
  • Skills in monitoring/assessing people, processes, or services to make improvements.
  • Skills in project management, social perceptiveness to be aware of others' reactions and understanding why they react as they do.
  • Ability in problem identification, reasoning, ability to develop original ideas to solve problems, persuasion, leadership.
  • In-depth knowledge of the field's post-degree employment opportunities and practices.
  • Interpersonal skills. Multicultural competencies; ability to work with diverse populations.
  • Ability to conduct risk assessment and evaluating risks as to likelihood and consequences.
  • Skills in judgment and decision-making, problem-solving, identifying measures of system performance, and the actions to improve performance.
  • Ability to develop original ideas to solve problems.
  • Experience working with high school students.
  • Experience working with international students.
  • Demonstrated management and conflict resolution skills to effectively lead and motivate others.
  • Skills to work collaboratively with other campus locations.
  • Skills in organization and customer service to effectively manage multiple important priorities.
  • Knowledge of University-specific computer application programs, or similar systems, and knowledge of University and departmental principles and procedures involved in risk assessment and evaluating risks as to likelihood and consequences.
Education and Training
  • Bachelor's degree in a related area and/or equivalent experience/training
