Program Manager, Student Research and Academic Affairs University of Notre Dame The University of Notre Dame ( ND.jobs ) is accepting applications for a Program Manager, Student Research and Academic Affairs . Applications will be accepted until 06/16/2024.

By turning hearts and minds toward Europe, the Nanovic Institute for European Studies seeks to create artisans of a new humanity. If you are interested in supporting a vibrant community of students and scholars and in joining a collegial, skilled, and fast-paced team committed to developing its staff members, please consider applying to serve the Nanovic Institute for European Studies in the Keough School of Global Affairs.

The mission of the Nanovic Institute for European Studies is to enrich the intellectual culture of Notre Dame by creating an integrated, interdisciplinary home for students and faculty to explore the evolving ideas, cultures, beliefs, histories, and institutions that shape Europe. To pursue this mission, Nanovic works to promote European studies at Notre Dame, transform its undergraduates, professionalize its graduate students, foster its interdisciplinary faculty research, and build its international network. The Nanovic Institute is part of the Keough School of Global Affairs, advancing integral human development through research, policy, and practice.

The Program Manager for Student Research and Academic Affairs will effectively shape, advance, and oversee the undergraduate and graduate student research and grant programs, the processes and development of the curriculum (particularly for the Minor in European Studies, the EURO Fellows, the Diplomacy Fellows, and other experiential learning programs), and the communities of Nanovic students and alumni. The position will also be responsive to variable special needs and projects of the Institute, including those envisioned as part of future grant funding. This position reports to the Senior Associate Director of the Nanovic Institute.

Duties include:

Develop and Manage the European Studies Curriculum:

  • Manage the Minor in European Studies (MES), including administering registrar systems, designing and implementing the EURO curriculum, actively recruiting students, advising students, and maintaining appropriate records for all students enrolled to ensure they are on track to graduate with the minor.
  • As needed, approve study abroad courses and co-curricular advising. Regularly evaluate the effectiveness and growth of the MES. Ensure a rich EURO course curriculum is in place each semester with appropriate instructors.
  • Provide logistical and organizational support as needed for Nanovic courses that involve travel or beyond-the-classroom learning (such as the courses connected to EURO Fellows, Diplomacy Fellows, Serving in Europe, or other Nanovic programs).
  • Consult and collaborate as appropriate with the Keough School, departments cross-listing curriculum courses, and the Office of the Registrar.
  • Serve as the Nanovic Institute representative at monthly Keough School undergraduate program director meetings.
  • Work strategically with the Keough School (aligning our curriculum with the requirements of the Global Affairs major when possible) to further develop and advance Nanovic's experiential student learning opportunities, including courses connected to research (in particular the EURO Fellows program), internships and service (particularly the Nanovic Institute's flagship Serving in Europe program), and Diplomacy (including the Model EU program, core Diplomacy courses, and potentially expanding the Diplomacy Fellows initiative into a full-fledged Keough School minor).

Student Research and Grant Program Management:

  • Oversee the undergraduate and graduate student research projects and grant programs (including research, internship and service, and fellowships, among others), aligning them to serve the research priorities and strategic goals of the Nanovic Institute.
  • Administer application processes, effectively managing the 'life cycle' of applications from ideation and proposal development to post-trip reports and stewardship.
  • Recruit and advise students; help students (one-on-one and in group settings) effectively develop their ideas into proposals.
  • Work with campus partners, including ISLA, CUSE, and the Office of Grants and Fellowships, and give presentations across campus (such as in EURO classes and Keough School student events) about Nanovic student opportunities.
  • Follow and implement risk management protocols developed by Notre Dame Global and compliance protocols developed by Notre Dame Research.
  • Monitor ongoing student projects.
  • Independently strategize on reporting and metrics, producing annual reports for the Nanovic Advisory Board, the Dean's Office, the Provost's Office, and others as appropriate.
  • Work with students to produce quality end-of-project reports and other outputs, especially those that center the research priorities and vision of the Nanovic Institute, and coordinate with the Nanovic communications team to publish research outputs and great stories on the Nanovic website and digital media platforms.
  • Develop and direct Institute-level student research projects, particularly over winter and summer academic breaks, that align with the strategic priorities of the Nanovic Institute; administrative responsibilities include the intellectual and logistical development of the program, its promotion, oversight of applications, review and selection of students, organization of meetings, methodologies, and external participants, and the timely creation of outputs.
  • Lead, with institute partners, the development and creation of the new undergraduate EURO (Engaging Undergraduate Research Opportunities) Fellows program within the Keough School of Global Affairs that effectively creates and trains a community of undergraduate researchers in European Studies, advising these students, facilitating the identification of faculty mentors for student research, and developing curricular components that are part of the program.

Develop and Maintain Strategic Student-Relevant Partnerships to Build a Vibrant Community:

  • Oversee the development and maintenance of distinct student communities of special or strategic institutional importance, such as the Minor in European Studies undergraduates, the EURO Fellows undergraduate researchers, the Diplomacy Fellows, and the Nanovic Graduate Fellows.
  • Develop alumni programs for these communities to strengthen relationships and create greater legacies of advanced engagement between 'Nanovic students' and the institute; the Nanovic operations and communications teams will partner on this execution.
  • Expand strategic collaborations with the Alumni Association, particularly with institute alumni and alumni with deep connections to Europe.
  • With institute leadership, help maintain and expand relationships with Notre Dame Global (in particular Notre Dame London, Notre Dame Dublin, and Notre Dame Rome) to advance student opportunities, such as internship placements and access to research sites.
  • Develop student programs with strategic connections to Nanovic signature programs, such as the Laura Shannon Prize, the Barrett Family Lecture, and the Nanovic Forum.

Team Expectations and Support.:

  • This position will help foster the education and formation of students in European Studies and serve as a key contributor to the Nanovic Institute's research task force, supporting institute leadership in shaping and elevating the institute's research profile, particularly with student projects that advance the strategic plan.
  • Support student programming as needed and as developed with others in the institute or Keough School.
  • Attend staff meetings and collaborate with other staff members and external units during planning and execution phases to ensure the success of the institute's activities, programs, and publications.
  • Coordinate with institute teams such as the research task force, development task force, operations team, and communications team, with faculty fellows, and relevant university groups within the Keough School, Notre Dame Research, and Notre Dame Global.

Minimum Qualifications:

Masters degree or Bachelors degree (5 years) or advanced certification beyond Bachelors.

  • Experience with advising students and international programming
  • Research experience
  • Relationship management experience
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Creative insight and time management to meet its objectives on sometimes critical deadlines

The person in this role should be a strong collaborator with a drive to succeed as part of a team, strong organizational and project management skills, and a high degree of independence and initiative.

Preferred Qualifications:

Advanced degree in the social sciences, global affairs, law, the arts, or humanities. Knowledge of and/or deep interest in Europe and European Studies is essential.
