Public Health Analyst Job Description

Statistical programming support required in three primary areas of activity: statistical data manipulation, statistical analysis, and technical assistance for the Epidemiology and Applied Research Branch (EARB) of the Division of Cancer Prevention and Control. (DCPC).

  • The candidate must provide statistical analytic skills to produce descriptive statistical output for research covariates and outcomes. Output examples include frequency tables, summary statistics such as means or medians, and percentages. 
  • Using statistical programming, must be able to produce crude and age-standardized rates for research outcomes of interest, generate appropriate standard errors and confidence intervals for all requested estimates, and identify and create linear, logistic or multiple regression models for research outcomes.
  • The candidate must use high level statistical knowledge to provide technical assistance, feedback, and support to public health researchers focused on cancer prevention and control. 

The researchers use a variety of data sets available to the public with no restrictions (e.g., the National Health Interview Survey (NHIS), the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS), the Medical Expenditure Panel Surveys, Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project, IQVIA, the National Survey of Family Growth).

 

Collaboration on research projects will result in the completion of scientific publications and presentations. The candidate must possess the demonstrated capability to manage multiple assignments, providing all statistical deliverables in a timely manner.

  • Provide accurate and timely responses to staff requests for statistical analyses involving descriptive statistics, rate calculations (including age standardization), and linear, logistic or multiple regression modeling.
  • Document accurately all statistical procedures employed in analyses for internal and external dissemination (e.g., presentations, websites, and publications).
  • Perform work with an appropriate balance between independence and collaboration with other members of the analytic team, and with minimal oversight from CDC supervisors.

Minimum Requirements:

• Proficiency in SAS programming skills, which include variable recoding, variable label and format creation, data manipulation, and analytic file creation, potentially from multiple data source files.

• Proficiency in statistical software specifically designed to analyze complex survey sample data (e.g., SUDAAN, SAS survey procedures) and to generate all descriptive statistics, rates, and statistical models as described below.

• Proficient in use of SPSS to produce analytic data sets and statistical output per CDC researcher preference. Proficiency in SAS, SAS Survey procedures, SUDAAN and other statistical software designed to analyze complex data sets.
