Department Summary


In 2011, UCLA School of Law established the Lowell Milken Institute for Business Law and Policy with a $10 million gift from alumnus Lowell Milken. The institute serves UCLA School of Law students, faculty and the business law community. For more than two decades, UCLA School of Law has offered a Business Law and Policy Specialization for law students interested in practicing corporate and business law. The Business Law Specializations train law students to understand both the fundamentals and the nuances of complex business transactions undertaken by modern businesses. Building on the solid foundation of the Business Law Specialization, the Institute creates high-impact learning opportunities for law students inside and out of the classroom to gain the knowledge and to develop and practice the skills required for the next generation of outstanding leaders in law and business. Coupling UCLA Law faculty's outstanding legal scholarship with the real-world experience of instructors and guest lecturers including entrepreneurs, business executives and practicing lawyers, the Institute readies UCLA Law students for the early years of law practice and beyond.

Position Summary



Under the general direction of the Executive Director of the Lowell Milken Institute for Business Law and Policy, the Business Law and Policy Events and Communications Specialist is primarily responsible for the detailed planning and staging of operations and programmatic efforts of the Lowell Milken Institute. The Specialist is responsible for the logistics and execution of all business law-related programming including program representation and event promotion/marketing. Targeted audiences for the programs include the Law School community, alumni, donors, and practitioners. Events include conferences, lunch time talks, speaker series and symposia. The incumbent serves as the primary communications representative and program liaison. As such, the incumbent will create all internal and external communications for the Institute, broadcast events online, produce departmental newsletters throughout the academic year, and promote email marketing campaigns.



Salary & Compensation

Actual salary offers consider factors, including budget, prior experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business considerations. Qualifications



  • Between 2-4 years Professional work experience. (Required)
  • Demonstrated ability to organize and present complex information effectively to a range of audiences including faculty, students, staff and the public. (Required)
  • Demonstrated ability to organize and implement the logistical requirements of events and programs. (Required)
  • Detailed knowledge of Windows-based applications such as Microsoft Office suite, electronic mail systems. Demonstrated ability to manage data using software, such as Excel. (Required)
  • Some knowledge of WordPress and HTML coding. (Required)
  • Detailed knowledge in editing correspondence for correct meaning, word usage, grammar, spelling, and punctuation. Excellent writing skills mandatory to draft correspondence, memos, reports, messages which are clear, logical and concise. (Required)
  • Demonstrated ability to speak clearly, distinctly and diplomatically to obtain or relay concise, relevant information while using correct vocabulary and grammar. Demonstrated listening skills to accurately understand instructions and to carry out related tasks. (Required)
  • Ability to set priorities which accurately reflect the relative importance of job responsibilities and deadlines. Skill in working collaboratively to prioritize work demands and resources to meet anticipated deadlines. (Required)
  • Ability to take initiative, pay attention to detail, work independently, organize workflow, establish a productive work environment and follow through on assignments with minimal supervision. (Required)
  • Ability to post materials online and/or search the Internet for requested information. Ability to create and maintain Internet websites and pages. (Required)
  • Familiarity and experience with Internet and other search engine based research and utilizing Lexis/Nexis or Westlaw for research. (Required)
  • Knowledge of basic graphic design programs including Canva, Adobe InDesign, and Adobe Acrobat (Preferred)
  • Familiarity with content creation using social media programs including Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, and Hootsuite. (Required)


Education, Licenses, Certifications & Personal Affiliations



  • Bachelor's Degree (Preferred)

  • Background Check: Continued employment is contingent upon the completion of a satisfactory background investigation.

  • Interpersonal skills to communicate and interact effectively, with faculty, staff, students, vendors and the public. (Required)
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of information with tact and discretion. (Required)
  • Ability to supervise student workers and volunteers, including training, organizing work flow and establishing a harmonious and productive work environment. (Required)
  • Ability to attend on occasion early morning, evening or weekend events.
  • Ability to travel offsite for occasional program meetings and events.
