Job Title

Position Title: Program Associate for Literacy and Engagement

Location: Office of Equity, Family, and Community Engagement (16164 Asbury Park, Detroit, MI 48235)

Salary: $42,247 - $70,690

Reports to: Assistant Director of Equity and Engagement

Bargaining Unit: OSAS

Benefits Eligible: YES

Telecommuting Eligibility: Eligible for telecommuting up to 20% (one (1) day per week.

Position Summary:

As a member of the DPSCD's Office of Equity, Family and Community Engagement, the Program Associate for Literacy and Engagement is responsible for coordinating, scaling, and managing district wide initiatives and programs targeting families of students who qualify for additional support related to equity in literacy outcomes. This position supports families through program management, project management, stakeholder engagement, and data management. This central office role works as part of the Equity and Engagement team to lead the intersection of literacy initiatives, family and community engagement, and equity work.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Must possess and provide evidence of a bachelor's degree (or higher).
  • Must be proficient in Microsoft applications - Outlook, Word, Teams, Excel, PowerPoint, and Forms.
  • Must have excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to engage students, parents, guardians, families, educators, administrators, central office staff, and vendors.
  • Must have a demonstrated value of literacy, equity, advocacy, community, and service.
  • Must have experience with program management and/or project management.
  • Must have experience working with schools and / or collaboratively across diverse groups in a multi-faceted organization.
  • Must have experience in literacy program development and educational context for supplementing core instructional.
  • Must exhibit cultural competence in the context of a diverse public school district.
  • Must have strong written, verbal, and nonverbal communication skills, including the ability to write project plans, reports, and other content, and to facilitate professional conversations, meetings, and workshops.
  • Must demonstrate critical and creative problem-solving skills, including anticipating potential problems, identifying root causes, and presenting practical solutions using critical thinking, creativity, and resourcefulness.
  • Must value continuous learning and possess a history of approaching work with a growth mindset.
  • Must thrive in fast-paced, multifaceted, goal-oriented, community work and embrace the challenges, ambiguity, and adjustments related to that kind of role.

Essential Functions:

  • Coordinates and manages family engagement programs related to literacy and equity.
  • Works cross-functionally and across departments to lead and contribute to conversations and initiatives about the intersection of literacy and equity.
  • Coordinates and manages other projects related to schools, family, and community engagement.
  • Facilitates meetings and workshops for students, staff, families, and community stakeholders.
  • Assists with researching and developing best practices in family literacy programs and school-related equity initiatives.
  • Collects, organizes, and synthesizes data and other information into PowerPoint presentations and reports.
  • Assists with planning and logistics related to meetings, workshops, trainings, conferences, and events.
  • Visits schools and attends school and district events to foster relationships with families and other stakeholders.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Internal Applicants

If you are a current Detroit Public Schools Community District employee, you do not have to submit to a new security clearance, unless your new role requires a different type of criminal background check.
