The Sabin Center seeks an Associate Research Scholar to take on a leadership role in the Renewable Energy Legal Defense Initiative (RELDI). The position will work with the Center's Faculty Director and Executive Director to provide assistance in support of utility- and community-scale renewable energy facilities; provide thought leadership, applied research, peer learning, and other outputs that will assist advocates and researchers seeking to strategically engage with the siting of these facilities; and help develop a plan for RELDI's long-term growth and sustainability. Successful performance will require providing effective assistance and drafting briefs, generating original research and communicating research findings clearly and through a variety of media and formats to a range of audiences in a manner that maximizes impact, as well as contributing to the University's wider research efforts. In particular, the incumbent will: Assist individuals, community groups, and advocacy organizations in support of siting utility- and community-scale renewable energy facilities and associated transmission and storage equipment, including in areas that do not enjoy equitable access to clean energy; Coordinate and otherwise assist in locating pro bono counsel to provide representation; Conduct independent research and develop and maintain resources for researchers, advocates and others working on issues related to siting utility- and community-scale renewable energy projects, including those in communities that may not have equal access to clean energy; and Conduct outreach geared toward alignment with complementary activities in and among other climate, clean energy and environmental and energy justice advocacy organizations operating at the national, state and local levels. This is a two-year position, with the possibility of renewal contingent on funding. About the Renewable Energy Legal Defense Initiative: Launched in 2019, RELDI adds legal firepower to the advocacy strategies employed by renewable energy advocates, and aids individuals, community groups, and advocacy organizations by providing them pro bono representation in courtrooms, before state utility commissions, in local zoning boards, and in other administrative contexts, to press for the rapid development of utility- and community-scale renewable energy. The goal of RELDI is twofold: First, to use strategic litigation and administrative advocacy to establish factual and legal precedent that can be employed and replicated in the many similar siting battles taking place across the country. Second, to empower individuals and organizations to defend utility- and community-scale renewable energy projects against siting challenges, support progressive energy policies in court and administrative settings, and fight undue restrictions on renewable energy development. These twinned goals both serve the purpose of increasing the quantity of clean energy being generated and used to power our electric grids; light, heat and cool our homes; move people from place to place; and manufacture our goods and services. RELDI is a collaboration between the Sabin Center and Arnold & Porter LLP. Minimum Qualifications: J.D. or equivalent legal degree. 3-8 years of professional legal experience with a government agency, NGO, law firm, corporation, or law school center. Admission to the bar in at least one U.S. state. Experience in climate change, environmental, energy, facility permitting, and/or land use law and policy. Columbia University is an Equal Opportunity Employer / Disability / Veteran
