Job Description - Office of Military & Veterans Success Center Coordinator

Office of Military & Veterans Success Center Coordinator Location Washington, DC : The Talent Acquisition department hires qualified candidates to fill positions which contribute to the overall strategic success of Howard University. BASIC FUNCTION: The Veteran Services Coordinator is a member of The Office of Military and Veterans Team via The Office of Student Services, which is a part of the unit within the Division of Student Affairs. The Veterans Services Coordinator will advocate, provide, and coordinate the necessary support services for the successful matriculation of Veteran Students. The position plans, organizes, coordinates, and supervises the daily operations of the Veterans Center for Success; assists in developing, implementing, and monitoring effective services designed to assist the veteran student population transition from military to civilian life in an educational setting and reports to the Assistant Director for Military and Veteran Affairs. This is a three-year grant funded position. SUPERVISORY ACCOUNTABILITY: This position has responsibility or authority, which is limited to the direction of student workers. NATURE AND SCOPE: The Veterans Services Coordinator brings together student, faculty, staff, and community Veterans to develop on-going programming (social, educational, and developmental) for our Veteran community. Developing co-curricular resources to sustain the program and identify and engage in services that are necessary for our Veteran community. Additionally, this individual must coordinate a comprehensive and collaborative campus-wide effort to maximize the recruitment, retention, and graduation of veterans, military personnel, and support their families. Must be willing to work a flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends. PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES: The incumbent performs a variety of administrative functions and will work collaboratively with administrators, faculty, staff, and students in promoting the student academic, and personal achievement within a student-centered environment. CORE COMPETENCIES:
  • Assists to develop and coordinate services, programs, and other support strategies to assist with the education and development of military connected students; oversee implementation of services, programs and specific support strategies.
  • Serves as a resource for veteran students by referring to other university services or other outside agencies; establish and maintain a list of resources and information for veterans; follow-up with students to determine if further assistance is needed.
  • Serves as a liaison between students and the Veterans' Administration.
  • Develops active collaborations and partnerships with veterans' and community organizations to augment the services currently provided by the university in support of veterans. Promotes the Center for Success through various outreach methods, including workshops and outreach events both on campus and the community.
  • Monitors academic records for changes in status and report changes of status to Department of Veterans Affairs in a timely manner to preclude college liability; ensure the College, veterans/dependents are complying with educational goals compatible with Veterans Affairs federal regulations. Serves as certifying official for the Veterans Affairs to certify educational benefits for students.
  • Coordinates the Veterans Affairs work study program by placing eligible students, maintaining records and timesheets; submitting appropriate paperwork to the Veterans Affairs, interviewing, hiring, and terminating students as needed.
  • Gathers and maintains data and statistical information to ensure appropriate services are provided to prospective and current veteran students.
  • Designs, implements, and markets an orientation program for veteran students.
  • Assists in coordinating the dissemination and communication for the Veterans Resource Center including website design and maintenance and communications to students.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
    • Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.
    • Minimum of five (3) years of related experience working with the Veteran community and experience advising student programs.
    • Ability to communicate and write effectively.
