Position Description

Railway shop workers perform various routine electrical, mechanical, plumbing, carpentry, fleet maintenance, janitorial, painting and welding work as required to assure proper operation and maintenance of railroad machinery, equipment and facilities.

Responsibilities Include

  • Arrange and move furniture and equipment

  • Perform minor structural repairs to railroad facilities and equipment

  • Requisition, stock and replenish materials and supplies according to established procedures

  • Operate motorized equipment to include, but not limited to leaf blowers, line trimmers, floor buffers, vacuum cleaners and sweepers as assigned

  • Fill fuel tanks and inspect vital fluid levels of gasoline and diesel powered equipment and locomotives

  • Perform minimal service to automotive and other gasoline and diesel equipment such as checking batteries, spark plugs, light bulbs, fan belts, and change flat or worn tires, installing and repairing tire chains

  • Inspect vehicles and/or equipment for abnormal conditions and report/repair; maintain work areas and equipment in a safe, clean and orderly condition; and wash, clean and polish gasoline and diesel equipment

    Performs heavy manual labor, including lifting objects weighing up to 75 pounds and working in awkward positions.

Qualifications

Graduation from high school or equivalent, and two years' experience relating to the servicing of automotive or mechanized equipment or graduation from a related vocational program.

LICENSES, CERTIFICATES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS

  • Possession of a valid Washington State Class A Commercial Driver's License with air brakes and combination

  • Transportation Worker's Identification Credential (TWIC) (application to be made within 14 days of hire to result in the issuance of the TWIC and maintenance thereafter)

  • First aid and CPR card

  • Certifications required to operate a forklift, scissor lift and small crane by completion of probation with maintenance thereafter

Knowledge & Skills

  • Health, safety regulations and proper use of personal safety equipment.

  • Requirements of maintaining buildings in a safe, clean and orderly condition.

  • Use and care for assigned power and manual tools.

  • Use of cleaning compounds safely.

  • Complete routine duties as assigned without close supervision.

  • Understand and follow oral and written directions.

  • Lift heavy objects in awkward and confined spaces, using proper lifting techniques.

  • Mechanical parts of vehicles and equipment.

  • Automotive tools, materials and servicing procedures.

  • Proper methods of storing equipment, materials and supplies and inventory procedures.

Appointment is subject to passing a background check and a pre-employment medical exam and USDOT drug screen. This position is covered by a Labor Agreement between the City of Tacoma and Local 160. New employees must successfully complete a 125-shift probationary period prior to obtaining permanent status in this classification.

Direct Deposit: Employees are paid on a bi-weekly schedule by direct deposit.

Salary Increases: Based on satisfactory job performance, the City provides for a regular progression of salary increases for most classifications according to the salary schedule.

Union Affiliation: Many job classifications are covered by union security provisions which require union membership, dues, or payment of equivalent service fees.
