Consistent with the university’s shared services agreement with the William & Mary Foundation (WMF), this position is assigned 5% effort to support WMF with the responsibilities outlined below. Position Summary:

The Associate Director of Regional Advancement, DC Metro, is an important member of the regional fundraising team in the Office of Advancement at William & Mary. The Associate Director is responsible for developing and managing a portfolio of donors and building philanthropic strategies for the donors and prospects in the DC Metro region. The Associate Director is a fundraising generalist, soliciting and stewarding gifts benefiting any/all of William & Mary’s schools and programs; their duties include major gift fundraising and prospect qualification and engagement with W&M alumni and friends of the university. The Associate Director is expected to develop a robust major gift portfolio of 125-150 donors by the end of their second year in the position, with gifts totaling $750,000 to $1 million+ annually. They will cultivate, solicit and move prospects toward gifts benefitting any/all of William & Mary’s schools and programs, targeting philanthropic commitments of $25,000 – $100,000+. In addition to annual dollars raised, performance goals include activity/move measures as well as the number of prospects identified and qualified for major gift potential. The Associate Director reports to the Senior Director of Regional Advancement, DC Metro, and works closely with colleagues on the DC Metro regional team as well as internal partners in Advancement, including other regional and unit development professionals, colleagues on the communications, events, stewardship, alumni engagement, and annual giving teams, as well as staff and faculty partners on campus. The successful Associate Director will be a proactive and collaborative member of this dynamic team and a champion for diversity and equity as William & Mary builds on its success and continues planning for its next campaign. The Associate Director will ideally work and live in the Northern VA or DC Metro area. The Regional team works remotely but has access to flexible office space in the W&M Washington Center on Capitol Hill. Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or the equivalent combination of education, training and or experience.
  • Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusiveness, including, but not limited to, collaboration, staffing and programming.
  • Understanding of philanthropy in higher education the impact it has on the future of higher education.
  • Experience (typically 3 years) managing and developing relationships with constituents, clients, or customers,. Examples include outside sales, marketing or public relations, financial planning or wealth management, admissions or enrollment, and membership development, as well as academic fundraising or alumni engagement.
  • Excellent interpersonal, written and oral communication skills with fluency in using persuasive language to promote visionary opportunities.
  • An entrepreneurial spirit, independence and ability to work effectively and successfully with minimal supervision and collaborate while building consensus among colleagues.
  • Strong organizational skills and an ability to successfully handle multiple and complex tasks and projects concurrently.
Preferred Qualifications:

  • An Advanced Degree (preferably a Master’s degree) in higher education administration, business, or another field.
  • Progressively responsible experience (typically 5+ years) managing and developing relationships with constituents, clients, or customers, in a for profit or nonprofit setting, with the ability to innovate, implement dynamic change and exceed goals.
  • An appreciation for and/or connection to William & Mary, its mission, history and unique focus on undergraduate research and a liberal arts education.
  • A curious nature and interest in lifelong learning.

Advertised Pay Range:

Up to $80,000 commensurate with experience.
