Compensation Overview

The annual base salary range provided for this position is a nationwide market range and represents a broad range of salaries for this role across the country. The actual salary for this position will be determined by a number of factors, including the scope, complexity and location of the role; the skills, education, training, credentials and experience of the candidate; and other conditions of employment. As part of our comprehensive compensation and benefits program, employees are also eligible for performance-based cash incentive awards.

What Is the Opportunity?

Travelers’ accounting team serves as the steward of our financial information and controls to ensure compliance with all internal policies and external requirements. The team creates transparency about the health of the company by providing timely, accurate, and actionable information to all stakeholders.

As Sr Director, Accounting – Bond Specialty Insurance (B&SI), you have oversight for timely and accurate books and records for reporting to both internal and external parties while maintaining a strong control environment. As an influential partner to the business, you will interpret, communicate, and apply financial analyses in a way that resonates with the intended audience. You will also review, approve and provide direction and leadership for all financial activities including journal entries and account reconciliations. This position manages a team of 2 finance and accounting professionals.

Role includes exposure to BU/SSU leadership through MYP and annual expense planning processes along with segment expense focused earnings preparation process.

Other responsibilities include engagement with B&SI strategic initiatives, driving expense reporting efficiencies including enhancement of tools and reporting capabilities to create value-add analysis and opportunities

What Will You Do?

  • Leverage business perspectives to oversee robust financial analyses and operational perspectives with a focus on key performance metrics (i.e. production, profitability, expense management, staffing).
  • Oversee the development and creation of overall financial/business plan, budget, and forecasts.
  • Engage and influence across multiple functions in order to develop strong analyses and financial and strategic plans.
  • Responsible for internal management based financial reporting for complete and consistent results with corporate policies and standards.
  • Review external financial statements which include GAAP (Generally Accepted Accounting Principles), SEC and STAT (Statutory Accounting Principles) with a comprehensive view of the impact they have on the organization.
  • Develop, perform, and certify complex financial controls, in accordance with Sarbanes-Oxley requirements.
  • Oversee documentation to support internal and external audits with internal and external auditors.
  • Ensure compliance with various financial external regulatory requirements and internal accounting policies.
  • Design and lead projects that analyze and implement the most complex business and financial regulatory changes relating to financial reporting, such as mergers and acquisitions, etc.
  • As a manager of people, provide leadership, coaching, training, mentoring, staffing, and performance management and development to employees, in addition to ensuring the understanding of departmental objectives, vision, and strategy.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

What Will Our Ideal Candidate Have?

  • Bachelor’s degree in finance, accounting, economics, and/or professional designations, such as CPA, CMA or comparable advanced professional education.
  • Extensive experience with Financial Analysis concepts, principles, processes, applications and accounting practices and principles within the insurance and financial services industry.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to present, influence, and negotiate at various levels of the organization and with external partners.
  • Exceptional data analysis skills with the ability to interpret trends and report insights and recommendations to business partners.
  • Advanced leadership skills with the ability to mentor, coach and develop team members, leverage differences, and strategically align resources to accomplish key objectives.
  • Advanced organization skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities simultaneously and follow through to ensure timely completion.
  • Experience using Microsoft Office (e.g., Excel, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint) and Financial Reporting Software (e.g., TM1, Essbase, Hyperion, etc.).
  • Ability to apply the most complex accounting and financial concepts and controls to financial systems and processes.
  • Deep understanding of Travelers’ business strategy and plan objectives to align with enterprise goals.

What is a Must Have?

  • Seven years of finance, accounting, financial planning, or related experience.
