Description
Conducts inspections and investigates public health complaints involving food and drinking establishments, day care centers, foster, group and boarding homes, halfway houses, residential treatment centers, schools and private on-site sewage facilities.

Responsibilities
1. Inspects and conducts on-site investigations of food and drinking establishments to prevent food-borne illness outbreaks, and ensures food establishments are within compliance with state and local environmental laws.

2. Performs annual health and safety sanitation inspections of day care centers, residential treatment centers, boarding, group and foster homes for compliance with state and local environmental laws.

3. Answers inquiries and consults with private entities and the general public regarding environmental issues and laws; conducts conferences; provides educational training for food handlers; and completes various activity reports.

4. Performs routine inspections of private and public schools to investigate food- borne illnesses and other sanitation complaints, to ensure compliance with state and local environmental laws.

5. Collects water samples, inspects private septic systems and conducts FHA, VA and conventional loan inspections, upon request.

6. Investigates reports of public health nuisances and other public health complaints.

7. Performs other duties as assigned

Qualifications
Education, Experience and Training:
Education and experience equivalent to a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Biology, Environmental Science, Community Health, or in a job related field of study. One (1) year of work related experience.

Special Requirements/Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
Must be a registered professional sanitarian or become registered within six (6) months from the date of employment. Knowledge of standard software applications. Ability to effectively communicate, both verbally and in writing, and establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, departments and the general public. Must be knowledgeable of health and biological principles and procedures. Must possess a valid Texas driver’s license, with a good driving record and reliable transportation. Must pass an extensive background investigation.

Physical/Environmental Requirements:
Ability to withstand prolonged kneeling, sitting, standing, walking and climbing. Ability to travel to various work site locations.
