INVESTMENT STRATEGY
JMI invests in software and AI-driven companies with proven business models, rich intellectual property, high recurring revenue, and long-term growth potential. We look for opportunities where we can bring our company building experience to create shareholder value and have completed 120 exits to date. JMI typically invests between $20 and $500 million in each company, providing growth capital and/or shareholder liquidity.
As software evolves, we continue to embrace new opportunities created by AI, both in the companies we invest in and across our portfolio.
TEAM & CULTURE
At JMI, we win as a team. Our culture is collaborative, hardworking, low ego, and grounded in a shared commitment to finding and helping build exceptional software companies.
Our team spends significant time in the market meeting founders and executives across North America. Great software companies can be built anywhere, and we go where they are.
We operate as one team, investing from one fund with one strategy. Sourcing is in our DNA, and everyone - from analysts to partners - contributes to developing investment ideas, evaluating opportunities, and building relationships with exceptional companies.
We value people who bring energy and hustle, ask great questions, share their perspectives, and roll up their sleeves to help the team win. Analysts are given meaningful ownership from day one while working alongside experienced investors who are invested in their development.
JMI’s investment team includes 40+ investment professionals and is supported by an experienced value creation group that works alongside our portfolio company management teams to drive growth and build industry leading businesses.
OPPORTUNITY
Position: Analyst
Location: San Diego, CA
Start Date: July 30, 2027
JMI’s Analyst Program offers a unique opportunity to begin your career as a growth equity investor. From day one, Analysts work alongside senior investors and are trusted with meaningful responsibility for identifying and evaluating potential investments.
At JMI, sourcing is a core part of investing. Every conversation requires investment judgment: Is this an attractive market? Is the product differentiated? Is this a team we want to know? Analysts speak directly with executives, develop perspectives on businesses and sectors, and make judgments about where JMI should spend its time.
Analysts have real ownership in that process: they lead sourcing initiatives, develop sector expertise, identify companies they believe JMI should pursue, and help shape our investment pipeline. Those conversations build both investment judgment and relationships -that often develop over years before JMI ultimately invests.
JMI invests deeply in the development of its investment professionals and has a strong track record of promoting from within. High-performing Analysts can continue on an Associate track. We are also committed to helping Analysts build a foundation for long-term success, whether at JMI, in other investing or operating roles, or at top graduate schools.
Specific responsibilities include:
- Build relationships directly with founders, CEOs, CFOs, and other executives to identify and evaluate potential investments
- Own sourcing initiatives - identify companies, prioritize opportunities, make early investment assessments, and elevate the businesses you believe JMI should pursue
- Engage with entrepreneurs every day - by phone, email, and in person - to understand their businesses, markets, customers and challenges
- Develop investment judgment over time by tracking promising companies as they grow, forming a view on when JMI could be the right partner, and maintaining relationships well before an investment opportunity is actionable
- Work within sector teams to develop and advance investment theses across horizontal and vertical markets with software and AI, using research, experts, and founder conversations to identify attractive markets and companies
- Contribute to due diligence on new investments, including market, customer, and competitive analysis and financial modeling, with formal training and on-the-job opportunities to build these skills
- Gain exposure to our portfolio companies by working with our value creation team, supporting M&A, and attending board meetings
Ideal qualifications include:
- 0 - 2 years of full-time work experience and strong academic achievement; we are less interested in a particular major or prior internship than in how you think, what you are curious about, and what you have chosen to pursue
- A track record of initiative and achievement, which may come from internships, academics, athletics, entrepreneurship, research, campus leadership, or other experiences
- Interest in software, AI, and technology-driven business models
- Intellectual curiosity and an interest in understanding how businesses, markets, and technologies evolve
- Ability to build relationships with a wide range of people; energy and confidence to initiate conversations, ask thoughtful questions, and learn from others
- Strong judgment and the confidence to develop and express an independent point of view
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Self-starter who thrives with meaningful autonomy and responsibility
- A strong competitive drive, balanced with a collaborative, team-first approach
- Willing to relocate to San Diego, CA
